We are in Sanur right now and have spent a lot of time making arrangements, both for the wedding and for the days surrounding it. We are still working on both but will send an e-mail very soon once everything is finalized.
I have heard that some more people are coming. My friend Michelle, who I met in Japan, and her friend mark are coming. They are from New Zealand, which means we have people from four countries now! (England, America, Australia and New Zealand).
About Sanur...to be honest, we were a little disappointed with the beach as it doesn't look like we expected from the pictures. However, we have been visiting a lot of other beaches in the area. Nusa Dua has a nice white sand beach, with good water for swimming around high tide. Legian has a nice beach, especially at the part in front of the hotel we will be staying at (which I will come to later). It is a real surf beach, and is fun to watch the surfers riding some pretty big waves. Luckily they break quite a long way out, so for us swimmers, it is still possible to wade out in
the waves without too much trouble. My favourite beach, however, is a place called Dreamland. It isn't even mentioned in Lonely Planet guidebook, but we found it after having it recommended by a Swedish couple we met in Thailand. It is beautiful white sand backed by cliffs. The ocean is a aqua-marine colour, but is very rough. It makes it quite fun to dash in and out of the waves! The accommodation there is very basic though, so many people just take day trips, arriving in hoards by the afternoon. We are going to try to arrange a trip there in the morning, thus avoiding the crowds. Still, it is a beautiful spot.
Every night we have been checking out places to eat and see traditional Balinese dance performances, so we can take you to the best ones. Last night we checked out the Kuta nightlife, but didn't make it past 1am. We are saving it for when everyone is here!
About accommodation...
We will be staying in a place called Yulia I Homestay for three nights (September 2, 3, 4). It is a nice place but has a major downfall - no pool! For the wedding
(5th and 6th) we will be moving to Vila Shanti, a short walk from Yulia Homestay. It has a pool and all rooms have air-conditioning and hot water. Rooms start at US$40 a night. If you would like to book it for the Sanur part (those of you that haven't already booked somewhere of course), you can check out the website at www.vilashanti.com
The reception will be held at the restaurant next door to this, on the beachfront, so it will be convenient.
For the days after the wedding, we have shifted a little from Seminyakl to Legian, which is only about a mile away. It lies in between Seminyak and Kuta and has the best stretch of beach as well as easy access to the nightlife in Kuta. We will be staying at Three Brothers Hotel. Again, if you are interested in staying there, the website is www.threebrothersbungalows.com Rooms start at $20 a night for fan, or $30 a night for air-conditioning, and there is a pool. In both, breakfast is included.
You can book online, but if you have any difficulties, please let us know and we can visit either place and book you in if you tell us your exact dates.
A quick note on money...we have been relying on ATMs as we want to save our travellers cheques for India and Africa. Unfortunately, the maximum they allow you to take out per transaction is $150, and our bank at home charges $8 each time - that's a lot of commission! We advise you to bring your money in travellers cheques.
I hope this is helpful. Expect a mammoth e-mail soon with all the details of where exactly to meet for the wedding, and what we are planning as optional activities for the other days.
Can't wait to see you all! There will be quite a large crowd so it will be a lot of fun!
