Rameshwaram is an island of the coast of Tamil Nadu and the site of a world famous temple. Jumping on a local bus, we headed on the two hour journey, crossing the 2km Indira Ghandhi Bridge from the mainland to this small fishing island. We were disappointed to see that the conservation work on the temple was of an appallingly poor standard. Before we went, we had looked at photos of the temple online and expected courtyards of pillars carved with beautiful intricate designs. These originals have been replaced with pillars with carvings that a child would be ashamed of. This low standard of conservation work is prevalent throughout India and it's upsetting to think of the heritage that has been lost as a result.
