Lotus Temple

This temple (surrounded by pools to keep it cool in the summer) welcomes those of all faiths to come pray and/or meditate silently according to their own religion with an emphasis on universal peace. I especially enjoyed hearing 3 singers perform here: an Indian Hindu who sung in Hindi, an Asian Buddhist who sung in a language I didn't recognize, and an American Christian who sung in English.

Sankalp is a non-profit, non-gov't, non-religious school program started by a retired lieutenant from the Indian military. This series of schools is for impoverished children who would otherwise not be in school. The goal is to bring every child in Delhi up to the level of a 3rd grade education (able to read and write in both Hindi and in English).

Children of all ages (up to age 16) are in each classroom based upon their current knowledge levels. In addition to a basic curriculum they are taught hygiene, self-respect and right from wrong in hopes of later mainstreaming them into the public schools and their making a difference in the quality of lives of their families.

The school buildings are set up near the ghetto areas in order to be accessible to the children. The leaders are working on a mobile school program wherein a bus is a classroom and goes to the areas where children have not yet been reached.
