Gopalpur on Sea

Gopalpur(Time of Visit: April 1st 2010), a beach destination in the eastern part of India, little known to everyone probably because of lack of promotion as a tourist spot, is one of the finest beaches that I have ever visited. This is located in the state of Orissa in the Ganjam district.

I am not new to this place and this is my third visit to this beautiful beach. If you are looking for a place to relax from your daily busy schedule any sea beach could be the best place and if it is Gopalpur then nothing like it. How does it differ from any other beach destination? The three attractions which brings me here is the deep blue colour of the sea, high waves, and cool un-interrupted sea breeze all through the day. What else do you want? A perfect place to enjoy the bath playing around with the high waves, mercury is highly comfortable at any point during the day and it is not overcrowded by tourists. A long walk on the beach is really refreshing and you will find yourself in almost what you call a virgin beach.

I am

not alone here, obviously with my better half, put up in a hotel which is right on the beach. Perhaps this is the only beach where I managed to have a hotel right on the beach. There is almost nothing to do here other than “sea watching”. Your day starts here with a beautiful sunrise and you can find yourself a place sitting all alone in the beach, nobody else around you. Back hotel you can try out the local body massage but I would rather name it as a tribal body massage. Their techniques hugely differ from the one which you can get at any urban parlour. During dusk you can enjoy the view from top, yes a lighthouse located nearby. The Lighthouse opens at 3:30 pm and you can stay there till 5:30 pm. It is just a walking distance away from the beach. During the evening you can watch the vastness of the sea from a particular area on the beach which is nicely decorated with lights and sitting arrangements by the local government authorities. You can get average food out here but the multi cuisines are not available so one will have to compromise on that.

If you are really interested you can visit to the nearby port which was operational years back but now it is there just for name sake. Earlier there used to be a bridge which goes to the middle of the sea and you can walk up to sea end but now the condition of the bridge is so poor that it is closed. For local sightseeing one can hire an auto or even a car too. The local sightseeing includes visit to the port, some view points, a nearby temple, Chilka lake etc.

To conclude I would like to mention that this place will be remembered by me as a perfect beach destination to relax and chill for few days enjoying the strong waves and tremendous refreshing breeze un-interrupted all through the day.

How to reach there?

Nearest Airport is Bhubaneswar and one can hire a car to reach Gopalpur

Nearest railway station is Brahmapur earlier known as Berhampur. The Indian railways station code is “BAM”. From Kolkata one can catch Chennai Mail, Corromodal exp, Amravati exp, falaknama exp. Etc. to reach Brahmapur. It is an overnight or a day journey and takes about
