I'm leaving my home today. It will be a few days with relatives, then I fly to Mumbai on Sunday. Took the malaria medicine a few days ago. It made me drowsy, but that's it. I'm just finishing my final packing. It will be 86 degrees when I get to Mumbai, which is roughly 80 degrees warmer than it was here 2 days ago. Plans are starting to take shape. It looks like Kerala is out due to the high prices. Never tell them you have an American coming along if you want a good price. Outsiders are presumed rich and charged more. So, we are looking at staying with a friend in Jaipur, or going to Sri Lanka. We are also having a new year's party in Mumbai and renting a banquet hall. ... read more

Sunday, Dec. 25, I’m leaving Chicago O’Hare for Mumbai. My flight takes me through Zurich, but there is only about 1 ½ hour layover. Coming back on Jan. 15, I will have a six hour layover and am considering leaving the airport to explore the city. To be honest, I don’t know what I am doing while in India. The idea is to fly down to Cochin for a few days or a week. There, we want to take a house boat cruise. I’ve seen a few websites for these cruises where you stay on rice barge with a few servants and a guide. But nothing is booked yet. This is my second trip to India. I’ve added a few pictures of my first trip, which was in late May to early June of 2004. During ... read more

Hi Everyone!! After a hectic period of travel I am safe and (relatively) healthy in Pune. Pronounced "Poona", it is about 4 hours by train south-east of Mumbai (Bombay). After finishing my last entry in Jaisalmer, I hurried to catch the bus from the main circle a few minutes from the hotel. I was so sad to leave Shahi Palace that I just about cried! I also feel bad for leaving in such a rush - I really wish I'd said better goodbyes. I immediately missed the company of Gareth and Tracey, and suddenly I felt quite lonely. Amidst the great confusion of yelling men and animals and dust I climbed onto a bus bound for Amdehbad. Aboard, I found that I was the only foreigner, and the only woman. Only 3 or 4 people knew ... read more

I can not believe I made it here! The overnight sleeper was a success...thanks Kailash for taking such good care of me and booking that! I took two rounds of gravol to knock me out. There were a many times when I felt like a woman in the red light district on display. I was laying there and there is no curtain to the outside windoiw so when the bus had a chai stop and i am still in my bed, there were a many people (mostly men) who were just staring....it was too funny. At 2 am the driver woke me up to wish me a good night by leaning over at me for a number of minutes...he later asked me for just one kiss when i got off the bus...ugh...anyways I am here. Really ... read more

Geo: 19.048, 73.0828While traveling, it is always interesting for us to note what Western influences have crept into a country. In Taipei it is the 7-11s on every street corner; Starbucks has staked a claim in Thailand; and of course, McDonalds and fast food is everywhere. It is not too surprising that western influence can also be found in India.I'm embarrassed to admit it, but yes, I had to watch Indian Idol. It was all the advertising! For those of you who have watched American Idol, this is the same show, but with Bollywood tunes being belted out. Of course it was in Hindi, but I got the gist of who made it to the next round and who didn't. Advertising for Indian Idol is all over town on the billboards, magazines and newspapers. It seems ... read more

Well, today is my last day in India, at least for this trip. I have a taxi lined-up to take me to the airport at 9:30 PM. Hopefully, this taxi trip will not have the excitement that the one had for my trip from Agra to the train station. Today, I spent most of the day at the bazaars. I especially liked the Chor Bazaar (Thieves Market). I walked and walked and looked and looked. I even bought a few things. These items included a cheap bag so I can repack my all my “stuff” and divide its weight among two bags for the airline. Actually, I was thinking today was working out just as I planned when I decided to have dinner at a Chinese restaurant, Chopsticks, recommended by my guidebook. It showed up relatively ... read more

Until I got here, I didn’t realize how much hotter and more humid Mumbai was compared to the other Indian cities where I have been. Elsewhere, air conditioning was not necessary - not so in Mumbai. Although it gets a little below 70 degrees at night, the humidity continues on… To bring you up-to-date on my trip, the air flight from Kolkata to Mumbai when without any incident. Air Deccan (the Indian cheapo airline) gave me good service. They had me worried as it seemed impossible to call them on the phone. Any way, I made it to my hotel (Residency Hotel) about 11:45 PM on Tuesday. For some reason or other, there are no prepaid taxis from the domestic airport here in Mumbai. Thus, my taxi driver tried to insist I should pay him off-hour ... read more

After taking a bus from Diu to Ahmedabad we were assuming to have train tickets waiting for us. Wrong again. We had booked the tickets through an agency and although there were seats available in the train at the time of booking it had taken the agency a couple of days before actually retrieving the tickets for us. So the tickets we had were on the waiting list numbers 41 and 42 and we had no chance on getting seats on the train. We cancelled the train tickets and booked a night bus to Mumbai. For us it seems unacceptable that the agencies, who are there to book the tickets, can fail to do it properly. "If you want something done, do it yourself." When approaching Mumbai we saw how big a city it is. Slums ... read more

Geo: 19.048, 73.0828So, a month has passed since we left home and we are settling into some semblance of a routine. Life here is not a vacation, but we will get to those white sand beaches, with idyllic palm trees and sparkling blue waters, and when we do we will be sure to tell you all about it.Even though we walk the same path each day and see the same sights now, the differences from what we experience at home still make an impact. I'm not sure we will ever become used to the goings on here, like one becomes used to things at home and stops seeing things after a while. For example, we have decided that Mumbai is the land of discarded shoes. You can be walking down the road and there is a ... read more
