India's one of the smallest hill stations - Matheran literally means forest on top and it is. Matheran is declared as the eco sensitive region by ministry of environment forest and climate change government of India. There are two most important and unique things which make this place a must to visit hill stations when in India especially in Maharashtra are firstly world's only place where all types of motor vehicles are restricted and it has a narrow gauge toy train which runs between neral closest rail head and matheran on top. Matheran is located around 800 meters above the sea level and is around 90 kms from Mumbai and 120 kms from Pune making it a best weekend gateways from these metro cities. Hop on to any karjat bound local from Mumbai CST or Dadar to reach neral in 2 hours and 30 mins costing around Rs 30 one way. Get down at neral then you have two options either take the toy train up the hill taking you through the picturesque portrait journey of lifetime and reach matheran in 2 hours. There are fixed timing departing neral every two hours from 6 am till 12noon. Don't you worry if you have missed the toy train then there are private vehicles also available just outside the station costing Rs 80 per person one way. These taxies will drop you at the municipal office /entry point of the village. Alternatively if you are driving your own vehicle can also be parked here and then entry on foot/ponies / or hand pulled rikshaw. After arriving at the municipal office you have to pay entry fees of Rs 50 per person in cash. And now the experience begins the wilderness, steep valleys, forest, calmness and the joy of just walking is aaaaaaaaamazing. You can hear just two things either birds chirping or the other person talking.
Tip - plz book toy train in advance on irctc website.
Book your hotels in advance since limited accommodation available. Easy n cheap traveling from Mumbai in locals. Best time to visit monsoons when matheran is at its best.
