18 !!!!! yes we were squeezed in there too. Hello everyone Were back from Aurangabad now after spending 3 days there as a base for the Ellora caves, which are a set 34 hand carved temples, resting places and assembly halls. all made the made around the same time but by different religions, 12 buddhist, 17 Hindu & 5 Jain, some of which are home to hundreds of bats !!!! at one point chased us out!! Our journey home from the caves was hair raising to say the least, despite having 18 people in a small jeep the driver was weaving in and out of our lane around the tight mountain bends overtaking buses cows auto rickshaws cyclists taxis tractors and whole families on one motocycle!! We met a bunch of peeps in Aurangabad couple of ... read more

Christmas Day in Aurangabad Some people may have been wondering on Christmas Day whether there was a more perfect place to be celebrating Big J’s B-Day than where they were. Perhaps there was somewhere out there more fitting, more appropriate, and more enjoyable than their particular gathering. You see, some of us are not lucky enough to be able to enjoy the comforts of home and family at Christmas; some of us are living far from where we grew up, some of us are traveling, some have no family to go to, some of us are traveling, and some of us are stuffed toys. This is a story of three such souls this Christmas: two travelers and one fun loving Santa. After finding Mumbai to be a tad on the dull side, or more politely speaking, ... read more

Took a little detour, to avoid being amidst the crowds of westerners going to Goa. All trains in that direction were booked anyway. So I did what any traveler would do: took my bible (=Lonely Planet) and explored the options in other directions. Several people had already told me that the Ajanta caves are really worth a visit. The bible said Aurangabad is a good place to use as a hub, as it is easy to take day trips from there to Ajanta and Ellora (caves there as well). No seats available on the train to Aurangabad either, so I took another night bus. Finding a room was the next challenge. I looked at several rooms in different hotels near the train station (some of them even got recommendations in the bible)... I will never understand ... read more

Wow, after a long ass bus ride we finally arrived in Aurangubad in the early hours of Monday morning. I had never heard of this place, along with the next 6 or so places we would go but Hawk had some sort of plan put together with his partner in travel (the Lonely Planet) or as many call it, the bible. Although in the middle of nowhere, there was still posters plastered up everywhere screaming "Go watch 'Om Shanti Om'!" As we departed the bus, Hawk was busy chatting up some blonde lady, who I realized was scared of everyone and begged Steve to look out for her. She appeared to be in her late thirties, from Italy, spoke very poor broken English and her name was Pennelope. She asked us to go to her hotel ... read more

We hooked up with a private bus in Mumbai heading east to Aurangabad, our next stop as it lay between two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: The Ellora Caves and the Ajanta caves. Also, the Dalautabad fort was on the way to Ellora and sounded pretty cool. The bus ride itself was an interesting experience, as several Indians chose to sleep in the aisle and the largest Muslim known to man sat across from me and proceeded to choke on cats all night, or so it sounded like. On the bus we met a nice Italian woman, Penelope, who at great length insisted she join us on day 2 when we explore Ajanta. Day 1: Ellora and the Fort The Ellora caves are a series of 34 caves built into a rock wall (some carved downwards so ... read more

Yes, This would be one of my memorable trips. One of the trips that i would always remember for myself. :-) simply because, i was alone on this trip. I had always thought that someday, i would , 'just like that' decide to travel and not think about anything else. And i did just that. It was 1st October. Monday night. I was just going to go to sleep. And i thought, why not go somewhere. Travel just for a day. My idea was to pick a place i had never been before and i did not know of. So, i picked up my green Diesel Bag. Put my jacket, took a deo, some cash, and some identity proof. Thought, what if i ended up someplace,i would not want to be. Just a moment. Let me see, ... read more

The Ajanta caves are a world heritage site only a few miles from Jalgaon. The didnt disappoint. The caves are in a horse shaped ravine and were first disovered in 1819 by the brits out shooting tigers(whose grafity ruined some of the caves paintings). It housed buddist monks but was abandoned for unknown reason. Anyway they were pretty cool but i didnt think as good as Ellora(especially the Kalish cave). Some of the paintings were brilliant and some of the hollow columns were amazing aswell. The carvings of the buddha's(especially the sleeping one) that you can see in the photos were pretty cool aswell. We tried to walk up to the mountain viewpoint were the british first spotted the caves but the throngs of beggers and people who may aswell be selling bags of shite instead ... read more

Flew back to Mumbai from Goa which was slightly more comfortable than the train(1hr by plane opposed to 14 by train). Had to stay a night in Mumbai again before getting our 6am train to Aurangabad which is close to the Elorra and Ajanta caves. We were in 2nd class seating this time and got to expierence more of Indian culture, and also got melissa the mumps aswell!!! A lot of people were very interested in were you are from and all about you. A lot of the time they wil ask you what you work at in Ireland, before they ask anything else(name, were you going etc..) This is because of their caste system, it was strange but they need to size you up. Got to Aurangabad and we werent impressed. Presumed it would pass ... read more
