Hello there ... First, a quick note that I've hit the midpoint of my trip in India ... Six weeks down, six to go, and in 10 days my friend Adam will join me through New Year's! I've also left Northern India and I'm now in the south (in the tropics for all you winter lovers out there) and getting ready to explore some temples and beaches for the duration of my time here. Already, there are big changes, at least in Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka. 1. No cows on the street (nor pigs, dogs, puppies, etc.) 2. Therefore, no shit (Sherlock) on the street 3. Rickshaws with meters 4. New culinary cuisine 5. New language ... so long Hindi ... namaste! 6. Lots of wealth around ... very western feel (I just ate ... read more

From Varanasi we caught yet another overnight train to the city of Umaria and then a bus to the small town of Tala, the gateway into Bandhavgarh Park. The train was two hours late arriving in Varanasi and six and a half hours late getting into Umaria. We were suppose to arrive at 10pm in Umaria but instead got there at 4:30am. With no hostel in sight and the bus to Tala not leaving until 7am we had a few hours to kill. We convinced the station master to unlock the First Class waiting room and bunkered down with our sleeping bags on a reasonably clean wooden table. The table was a bit short for Jarrod and his feet hung over the edge but it was better than lying on the platforms dirty cement floor with ... read more

From Agra we took a 12 hour overnight train ride to Bandhavgarh National Park. I slept surprisingly well on the moderately bumpy train. Bandhavgarh has the highest density tiger population in the world. There are about 55 tigers and 22 leopards in the 105 square kilometer park. It is the former hunting grounds of the maharajas of Rewa. This was our first chance to get up very close to tigers. When tigers are found, they ride in specially trained elephants to take tourists to the tigers. The elephants have a platform strapped to them that holds 4 people and 1 ‘driver’. When it’s your jeep’s turn to go on the elephant, we climb from the tops of our jeeps onto the platform. The comfortable platform was padded and had a bar in front of you to ... read more

To combat the chill, I added another T-shirt to my arsenal of warm clothing for this morning's safari. The Swiss couple, Christoph and Elizabeth, proved to be good company and we spent most of the day together. They have done several trips in the past where they simply packed in their jobs, went travelling, then found something different on returning home, which I find quite refreshing. The first tiger of the day was actually spotted by Christoph - he saw the silhouette of a male against the dawn haze in the maidan. It was heading across the meadow, so we zoomed round to the far side and sure enough it eventually came plodding across. We successfully intercepted it where it came out onto the road, but unfortunately another Jeep arrived and spooked it, so it loped ... read more

After yesterday's early rise and the excitement of seeing the tigers, I treated myself to a rest day, which mainly consisted of wandering around the village and soaking up some sun. One disadvantage of my new room is that the TV and heater can't be on at the same time, as the plugs for each won't both fit into the only convenient socket. This meant I had to watch the Indian national badminton championships in the evening cold. Speaking of which, it sounds as though the Thomas Cup is in Jaipur in February, which might bear a visit. A Swiss couple called from reception to ask if they could accompany me on my safaris tomorrow. Two other people in the Jeep shouldn't be too uncomfortable, so I agreed. I just hope they haven't been eating lots ... read more

It was bitterly cold last night - even with the heater on full blast and 2 blankets on my bed, I was by no means comfortable. Added another chapter to the chronicle of my never-ending struggle with hot water - I assumed that there was no hot water, as none would come out of the sink tap, but I later figured out that only the shower has hot water, not the sink. I wore everything I had for the safari - T-shirt, long-sleeved shirt, long-sleeved T-shirt, fleece, and down vest - and was still shivering. The entrance to the park itself is only 5 minutes from the hotel, and we had to fill in some documentation at the gate, and were randomly allocated our guide. The gates opened at 6:30AM, and a line of Jeeps slowly ... read more

I was up early this morning, to catch some photos of the sunrise on the temples (which glow a slightly pinkish colour), and even at this hour I was hassled by some old crone trying to foist a flower garland on me. My taxi arrived at 9AM, and was a Tata Indica - a small car with a virtually non-existent boot. The journey took 6 hours and was dull apart from the appalling condition of the roads at times. There was one half hour stretch where we were bumping and bouncing the entire way. I'm staying at yet another MP Tourism place, the White Tiger Forest Lodge. It's cut from the same cloth as the others, in that it has all the conveniences I need. The rooms are raised up on stilts, and are connected by ... read more

We knew that the trip would be long and tedious, the Bandhavgarh National Park is not easy to reach. But we were absolutely determined to go there because we had met several people who had seen tigers there. We could not let this opportunity pass! Leaving Khajuraho at 7:30 a.m. (actually 8 o’clock), we hoped to make it there in one day, though it is only 237 km from Khajuraho. The first part of the trip took us to Satna and was very picturesque because we crossed the Panna National Park set in beautiful wooded landscape on a nice winding road. We could have reached Satna perfectly on time, if we had not hit upon a road blocking caused by a political demonstration. It was ridiculously small and the road merely blocked by a lorry tyre ... read more
