My husband and I take vacations twice a year. We both love travelling and exploring new places. This time when we sat to discuss our next holiday destination, I googled him some pictures of Kerala. And we both were in love. I had wanted to visit Kerala ever since I was in college. There was something that attracted me to the place. Within a month, our bags were packed and we were off to Kerala.
We arrived at Cochin early in the morning and immediately left for Alleppey. The drive from Cochin to Alleppey was a short and beautiful one. We reached in around an hour and a half and checked in into our hotel on the water, a houseboat. The houseboat drifted along the backwaters and we relaxed on the deck. The view of endless water was so soothing. It made me forget all about our lives back home. In a few hours, our boat docked at the port, where we got off and had lunch at a restaurant that served authentic south Indian food. And did I tell you that I love idli, dosa, uthappa, medu vada and all other yummy delicacies that are served on banana leaves.
Post lunch, we returned back to our houseboat and the evening just went by lying on the mattress laid in the balcony of our wooden houseboat. The weather was so beautiful, it really made our day even more special. It gave us the time to bond. There was no television, no noise, no vehicles, no people, only peace and tranquil. The houseboat cruised away in the backwaters and we enjoyed the beautiful views. This is something that you have to experience at least once in your lifetime. The boat anchored in the backwaters around 7 in the evening and that was it for the day. We had dinner in the houseboat and slept peacefully like little babies.
The next morning, God knows how I convinced myself to leave that amazing houseboat. It was definitely the best accommodation I have ever lived at. The next morning we left for Varkala. We checked into a beach resort and after lunch, head out to visit Sivagiri. Sivagiri is a pilgrim place where the Samadhi of the social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru is situated. The entire boundary of the Sivagiri mutt had such positive vibes. We also visited the Sharada
temple which hosts the idol of Goddess Saraswati. Both these places were beautiful and had a calming effect on us. We returned to our resort around 7 in the evening. After freshening up, we splurged on some non-vegetarian south Indian food, at one of the beach shacks, which was mouthwateringly delicious. We checked out of the hotel early morning but kept our baggage at the reception and went for a walk on the beach. We walked along the paved footpath that was bordered by coconut palms, quaint shops and beach shacks. The breathtaking view of a long winding stretch of cliff and the Arabian Sea is a must see for everyone who visits Kerala. After having breakfast at the beach, we picked up our stuff and left for Kovalam.
We spent the entire day at the Kovalam beach. There was so much happening at the beach. We met a couple who was from England and had a few drinks with them. They told us about their journey across India and it definitely gave me a few more destinations for our next travel. In the evening, we went for a swim in the beach water. Then we took a relaxing ayurvedic massage. To my surprise, the beach activities went on till late in the night. Exhausted from all that we did throughout the day, we called it a night around 12. The next morning we had to check out from the hotel and Trivandrum was our next destination. We visited a few places in Trivandrum as we had a late evening flight and did not want to waste the day. We went to the Padmanabhaswami Temple, the Napier Museum and the Kuthiramalika Palace. Our taxi then dropped us off the airport and we were home in a few hours. I don’t remember how long the flight was because I was sleeping all through it.
Kerala was a trip that helped us reconnect. When we are at home, we are both busy with our jobs, our friends, our commitments and find very less time for ourselves. But during this holiday, we spent each and every moment in each other’s arms. This definitely made up for all the lost time. I keep looking at the pictures of our trip over and over again trying to relive the moments. I can’t wait to plan our next trip and make some more unforgettable moments.
