For some reason I couldn't quite figure out, I ended up at this little village called Rewalsar, hidden away in the Himalayan foothills. One of the guys at the meditation retreat was a monk from the monastery there and he recommended it, so it seemed the right place after the buzz of Mcleod Ganj. Indeed, Rewalsar is a very chilled little village, surrounding a lake holy to Hindus and Buddhists. Inhabited by an eclectic mix of Hindu devotees, Buddhist monks and nuns, odd-ball villagers and pilgrims from all over the globe, it has a unique and charming character. It was only after talking to an Austrian guy, who'd spent the past month meditating in a cave above the town, that I became aware of the location's spritual appeal. About 500 A.D, an enlightened Buddhist master, called ... read more

Hy again We boarded the local bus this time to Rewalsar. A eight hour winding trip through the majestic Himalayan foothills. Rewalsar is a tiny village with an abundance of budhist monesteries and temples. The village is built around a sacred lake which is teaming with giant cat fish, which seem to pulsate like one living creature. We stayed in a simple monastry and ate extremly modest food. It seemed the only vegetable they had there was cabbage and a bit of carrot. It was mainly Tibetian restaurants there, so we lived on Momos (which are kind of like dim sims) and Thukpar (noodle soup). The sunshine was glorious so we decided to do a walk to the tempel cave, atop a small mountain. We asked around for the best way and were told it ... read more

Yes a slow day today with John getting to see the sights in Mandi while I indulged in the delights of English-language cable tv - caught up on my "Bold and the Beautiful", watched a few movies and even caught some of Miss America 2006. John got to meet some of the locals and take in the scenery without me quite well, and even his talk of markets down the road couldn't tempt me out of the room. So my memory of Mandi shall be my dinner before me, and a lot of bad tv. (I have also been put off even the smell of Indian food now.....)... read more

Shimla to Mandi was the next route on the map, which meant another joyous chance to experience the wonders of Indian bus travel....this time fortunately for only half the time... We had a swift breakfast at the same place as the evening before, with a very captive audience of locals (I am starting to think that everything I do is extremely interesting....the way I eat, the way I drink water, the way I breathe, as I seem to have someone watching me do all of these all the time.....so I'm hoping that people will similarly be amazed at my talents once we get back to Ireland.....) We headed for the bus station and had to wait about an hour for a bus. We had a porter scout us out straight away. He looked like Quasimodo without ... read more

I took the slow route to Dharmsala with a night stop at Mandi. The local bus was ok - we changed somewhere on the road down to get the bus to Mandi. Sharing a room with an Isreali couple was fun, and spending an evening with them an Austrian guy who was quite interesting - he was motorbiking around India for a few months. Big white dreadlocks not so usual for the Austrian's I've met. ... read more
