Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Miserable Life Asia » India » Gujarat
Namaste all Where to begin is always a challange when many events have happened and access to internet is very rare. Go figure in India and accessing reliable internet and coordinating oneself with Indian family members whom don't hold the same importance of my contact outside their Indian family life. Mostly it is great to have Sonnelben's wonderful chai again. After walking each morning with morning prayer echoing in the distances Sonnelben greets me with the best tea on this earth. Full of ginger and pepper and the sweetest milk. It really kick starts your day. Took a whirlwind trip [View Full Entry]

2nd day Ahmedabad Asia » India » Gujarat » Ahmedabad
Yesterday we got up early to check out of our prime room and headed out on a MP3 guided walking tour of the old city. We felt like proper tourists with headphones on gazing up at the buildings. The tour took us from an old mansion past a really old mosque with beautiful carved windows along past some British art deco to the old town fort. At the fort the tour started to really prove fantastic as it directed us into a tiny courtyard, up a flight of stairs through as office and up to the top of the old fort. [View Full Entry]

Thol bird sanctuary Asia » India » Gujarat
In the afternoon we headed off to book a sleeper train out of town and decided to try to get to the nearest wetland bird sanctuary. We walked over tho the nearest taxi stand and guys ran from everywhere to discuss our trip. After a lengthy discussion they told us it was over 100 kilometres away. At this point we pointed to the brochure where it says just 25 km from Ahmedabad and they went back into rushed discussion before agreeing that we were quite correct. Feeling confident we were on the same page we agreed on a round trip price [View Full Entry]

This morning we arrived in Ahmedabad via the sleeper train from Mumbai. We are a little cross eyed and hungry but excited to be here. As we arrived so early (6.30 am) very little is open so we are yet to get breakfast. The train was quite a good experience (our expectations were not high!) and we both got quite a bit of sleep in our tiny bunks. We also caught our first auto rickshaw into town to find a hotel. We are now off to explore the city and hopefully see some of the kite festival that is supposed to [View Full Entry]

Yes we are just NOW packing. We are last minute people, you know. We have about a week and a few days until we leave and packing is just a mess. Aside from mine, Arya's and Nikki's bags we also have bags with goodies for the family. I dont even want to know what the baggage fees will cost once we weigh our bags at the airport. Anyway, I set up this blog so that once I am in India I can post what is going on, what I am doing, etc. I am excited to go but a little nervous [View Full Entry]

Half a day at Vadodara Asia » India » Gujarat » Vadodara
Vadodara was known as Baroda formerly When I started to write about our recent trip to Vadodara, I found to my delight that the venerable ‘Vatvriksha’ became a mundane ‘Banyan’ tree in English language because early British found that the Hindu Gujrati ‘Banias’ (merchants) mostly conducted their business in the shade of these trees. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banyan Whenever I start writing a travelogue, a gather from the Net many such nuggets of what Avi calls “Profuse and Useless Information”. So, dear readers, like Avi, if you a [View Full Entry]

Ahmedabad was an interesting place. Being India’s 6th largest city, it didn’t have the relics and sites that one would expect, though it didn’t need them. The city was like the Manchester or New England for India as a place that underwent an industrial revolution, drawing millions from the countryside to work in its textile factories. As such, the city is more of a blue-collar city with most of its workforce being employed in industrial settings. Interestingly enough, most of the Indians I know in the States had roots in Ahmedabad’s state of Gujarat. Most “Guju&rs [View Full Entry]

Wieder Mal sleeper, diesmal aber 2 AC (also Bonzen Abteile) in Udaipur angekommen. Darueber spaeter. Laut LP "a trip from hell", die 7 stuendige Busfahrt inklusive Unsteigen.

Daher Weiterfahrt postponed. An Papa: Keine Sorgen machen!!

Ahmedabad: Hotel of MG Asia » India » Gujarat » Ahmedabad
