Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

The alarm rang at 5:30 a.m. The plan was to leave the house by 6:30. Considering there were 21 of us going on the trip, and half of us had slept at 2 the previous morning, I wasn't expecting us to leave as planned. Miraculously, we were all piled into cars, luggage and all, by 6:45. At that time of the morning, Mumbai's streets are eerily quiet. We raced through the city and were on the freeway in no time. The road stretched endlessly ahead of us. We had to endure a 14-hour drive before arriving at Rann Riders - the [View Full Entry]

Just before 2007 ended, I spent a week volunteering for a non-profit organization in Ahmedabad. Manav Sadhna works their magic from a humble corner of the Gandhi Ashram. I can not express all that my heart is feeling after spending too few days with these wonderful people. In such a short span of time, I truly felt the love and warmth they extend to so many hundreds of people whom they interact with on a daily basis. I was welcomed as one of the MS pariwar (family) - it was an incredibly humbling feeling. Across from Manav Sadhna is the second [View Full Entry]

Jaisalmer - Ahmedabad - Vadodara The bus left Jaisalmer at 5.00pm to Ahmehabad hoping to arrive at its destination by 4.00am the following morning. Before we actually left the station we had the usual tourist con trick which is to charge us for storing the luggage in the boot of the bus (despite having paid probably way over the odds for a ticket in the first place). Normally the charge is only a couple of rupees per bag but it had steadily been climbing and now reached its peak of 20 rupees a bag! That's 50p for both bags! Doesn't sound [View Full Entry]

We decided to take a slight detour from the standard travelers tour of India and head down to southwest Gujarat for a few days. We technically I really wanted to do it and Trish put up with me and all the hassles getting here entailed... Due to the obvious train difficulties we experienced we ended up spending the day at the Amedabad train station and it's vicinity and missed what would have been a chill/relax day in Junagadh. Getting here at 4:30am after a noisy train ride, our first priority was a little more sleep, followed by showers. After that we [View Full Entry]

Sabramati Ashram Asia » India » Gujarat » Ahmedabad
I was in Ahmedabad on Friday, 24 Aug 2007, for work and had some free time in the afternoon. I visited the Sabramati Ashram where Mahatma Ghandi lived from 1918 to 1930. It was here that he developed many of his philosophies and coordinated the early stages of India's strugle for independence from the British. On 12 March 1930, Gandhi left the ashram to begin the Dandi March to the Gulf of Cambay to protest the givernment monopolies on the production and sale of salt. He vowed not to return to the ashram until India was free and never again lived [View Full Entry]

Hey all Just on a journey from Mumbai to Udaipur, we couldn't find a direct route so now we're in Ahmedabad for an hour between trains. We had an 8 hour one from Mumbai and now we have a 6 or 7 one to Udaipur, so we'll arrive there very early morning, struggle through to day and see Udaipur, then we don't know completely what we're doing in Rajastan apart from that we have a train from Jaipur to Delhi on the 19th, and we want it to involve a camel trek. It's nowhere near long enough for what it meant [View Full Entry]

We arrive in Amhedabad at 5am. It is still dark but already warm. We take a rickshaw to the centre and walk to the river as the sun comes up and find somewhere shady for breakfast. After omlettes and fresh lime sodas and reading the local papers, we head out to see the city. Ahmedebad is the capital of the Gujarat state and made itself by being the textile centre of India, so you could say it is the Manchester of India. It is also a city with an interesting history. First thing we see is Dada Hari Wav, an [View Full Entry]
