This was a full driving day. We crossed into a new state. It wasn't straightforwardfinding the hotel, but we got there in the end. The hotel is fairly close to a cinema and we ate at a restaurant opposite. This turned out to be a busy restaurant and good. We had biryani which is a speciality of Hyderabad.... read more

The grand canyon of India is grand not in scale but in the silence and simplicity that you often forget about when living in India. We headed out there at 2 in the morning to catch the sunrise. It was a 4 hr long ride from Bangalore and when we got there we couldn't figure out if the sun was out or not. After figuring that out, we explored the village nearby(walked through). There were no stores, no hotels which was surprisingly pleasant. The fort was picturesque and clean. We found a renovated watch tower and settled in to watch the sunrise; along with it sweeping views of the land, clear blue skies and fluffy white clouds. I had something planned before heading to Gandikota; a crash course in time lapse photography. I did not have ... read more

Day 2, 7 am: We were up and about, all packed and ready, waiting to leave post breakfast and the poor Hotel Spectrum staff could not keep up with our pace, especially on a Sunday morning. After hurriedly devouring aloo parathas and clearing our bill, we carried down our luggage, without having the patience either for check out niceties or for the hotel staff to come and bid us adieu. 9.30 am, and we were on the highway once more after a quick refuel. And what a highway it was....the road that stretched out in front of us was smooth and totally without potholes. The scenic beauty of undulating hills and greenery on either side of such a road left us breathless and ecstatic. 10am: We were on cloud nine, having reached Ichchhapurum. Fortunately the check ... read more

Hyderabad The region of the subcontinent , today , known as Hyderabad in the district of Telangana , is very aged and dates back to the iron ages . Many episodes have shaped the character of the city and shot it to prominence in the last 400 odd years. Deservingly, the city has had hundreds of well illustrated articles describe its allure in manifold publications over several generations . Mine is not a regular tourist essay on Hyderabad per se . I will not be ( though righteous ) predictably waxing eloquent about the obvious locales like Charminar or Salar Jung Museum . My family has lived in that province for over a century . They have lived in the Deccan forever. So needless to say , we have a huge extended family spread all over ... read more

The calm before the storm. This trip was an easygoing precursor to my Roopkund trek. One of the few nearby places around Hyderabad, Papikondalu (Papi hills) is a very scenic place in the East Godavari River. Though not very popular outside, locals flock this place making it very crowded. I, Vivek and Aayush had been to Prashar Lake trek the previous month and wanted a simple luxurious trip where we wouldn't need to sweat it out. We picked this up from our backlog as we saw this was being organized at a convenient time and decided to complete it and tick it off our list. We started out initially thinking it was only the 3 of us from our gang but then got to know at the end that Aayush's friend Ankita was also joining us. ... read more

I had only a day to spare at Visakhapatnamh (also called Vizag) so decided to find best ways to utilize my time in this beautiful coastal city of South India. I reached Vizag on a Sunday morning which to me was a surprisingly lazy day with not many people on the road, despite a pleasant morning in this beach city. I had to take care of something personal after which I got a ride to RK beach by a gentleman. RK beach is named after Ramakrishna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramakrishna) who was the Guru of Swami Vivekananda. I was excited to be near the water but was not planning to get wet as I wanted to soak into the natures warmth. I was happy to take pictures using my mobile and relaxed watching the small and big waves crash ... read more

An early visit to the Undavalli cave temples was a highlight, carved from solid rock by Buddhists in the second century and adapted in the 7th by the Hindus the third level has a wonderful carved figure of a reclining Vishnu. The next hour or two was through rural countryside to the archeological site at Amaravathi where the remains of India's largest Buddhist stupa built at the orders of Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. Much of the carved stone that decorated the stupa are now in the British museum but a few pieces remain in the onsite museum. In the trees nearby was a fruit bat colony and some nesting birds. We traveled further north west to the Buddhist site at Nagarjunakonda which sits on an island in a lake created by the damming of ... read more

After a long torturous trip with to many long airport layovers I finally arrived in Mamalapuram just south of Chennai at 9.30pm; 31 hours after leaving Australia. I must have had about two or three hours restless sleep during this time so straight after hotel check in I crashed, rising at 5.45am to bath before heading down to the Shore temple at dawn hoping to get some nice pictures. When I arrived I expected the place to be accessable but it was all locked up, fearing I would miss the light I decided to follow the fence down to the beach where various people were bathing and making a ruckus. In the predawn light I moved around some rocks out of sight of the bathers and climbed over the fence in to the Shore temple complex. ... read more

No planning, not much hype, we just wanted to visit some place during my parents’ stay @ Hyderabad. Inspired by few of my colleagues, we chose to go to Rajhamundry & Papi Kondalu. As always, my selfish interest to go on a long drive with full load (7 ppl) on Mobilio certainly played a part in the decision of this trip. The quick plan was to start early morning @ 5 AM on 27th, reach Rajahmundry for lunch, and visit few places there. 28thwas dedicated to Papi Kondalu and drive back to Hyderabad. I must say, this plan worked perfect, but for the part that wasn’t planned, we did have lots of surprises which again made this trip memorable. With the inputs from several people and help of ‘google guru’, the decision was to take Vijayawada ... read more

"There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle." - Albert Einstein Karunalayam Care & Support Centre: July 21-24, 2014 It still shocks me to think sometimes that I am in India right now. I am currently sitting on a balcony, surrounded by flies and listening to the daily business of locals from Karunalayam. I hear ladies laughing as they clean up after afternoon tea in the dining area of the guest house we are staying at. I see a woman holding her baby and she hangs laundry and talks with an elderly man in Telugu, the local language. Men zip by on the motorcycles heading this way and that as a little boy strolls along riding a peddle ... read more
