... read more

Friday 6th November 2015 We arrived in Hong Kong at about 6pm with a plan to meet my friend Mel for dinner & drinks later that evening. Our original plan to take the metro to the hotel was quickly scuppered by throwing ourselves directly into Hong Kong rush hour. With the queues so deep we couldn't even see the train, never mind get on one, we abandoned the metro to find a taxi. Having finally located a taxi rank, we were speeding through the centre of the city in no time. The thing we both love about Hong Kong is the minute you arrive, you are completely engulfed by the huge buildings and bright lights and feel like you're at the centre of the world looking up. We were genuinely both mesmerized, and just a little ... read more

The plane arrived in Hong Kong early after leaving JFK a little behind schedule. It was a full flight. Even Business Class was over sold leaving me no opportunity for an upgrade. I was content to stay in Premium Economy even though the food was sub-par. At one time the food service was pleasant in Premium but that has slid with the passing of years since Premium Economy began. I have two and a half hours to wait before my next flight which is to Chengdu. A friend is meeting me at the airport and driving me to the accommodations that I am not familiar with. It is a little farther away from the university than what I am used to. The movies on the flight were entertaining although I had seen some of them before. ... read more

Greetings from the other side of the international date line! Hong Kong is hot, humid, wet and sticky – did I mention it’s hot here? Only in the mid 90’s but with matching humidity, I can barely breathe. It’s been a long day and a half but it does take time to traverse the globe, and until teleportation is developed (a la Star Trek) that won’t change. I had started out in Dallas and my first flight enroute to Asia was Saturday morning with a connection in Salt Lake, putting me back in Las Vegas by midday. I had just 10 hours in Nevada to unpack, do laundry, check all accumulated snail mail and repack an overnight bag, before it was time to return to McCarran for my redeye flight to Minneapolis. Call me crazy but ... read more

Landing at Hong Kong is interesting as the runway is completely surrounded by water. We went through immigration without a word being spoken and were handed a slip of paper giving us permission to stay in Hong Kong until next April. All of the formalities completed, we exited into a huge concourse. Here we found out information about the trains and bought tickets for 100HK$ (~£8.50) for a return trip. The airport express took about 25 minutes and was a smooth clean journey. After about 10 minutes we emerged from the underground section to catch our first glimpse of the mountains, harbours and high-rise buildings of Hong Kong. It was hazy as the sun was starting to climb over the peaks. We left the train at Hong Kong Central Station and headed outside. The first thing ... read more

Leaving tonight at 11.00pm for Germany. We asked for a late check out so we would have a base for the day when needed then hopped on a bus to the Star Ferry terminal and sailed across to Hong Kong Island for a nosey around. Specifically we wanted to ride the big escalator in the sky which, in other visits to HK we hadn't got around to. It was easy to find walking through the elevated walkways above the jam-packed streets. They're open sided so a breeze blows through and they're probably a few degrees cooler than at street level. Hectic activity below on the street. You have to wonder what all the activity is about. Who's going where for what, to do what to whom and why? The Central mid levels escalator rises 135 metres ... read more

We slept like angels. Angels who snore and have to get up in the night to pee. Awake at 5.30am and dozed for a good while before shaking ourselves out of our slightly jet-lagged mode and into 'let's get breakfast' mode. Plenty of variety at the breakfast place. Packed stuff away to have for morning tea, frugal as we are. Cheapskates as we are... Today, somewhere different so on the MTR to Hong Kong , off at the Admiralty stop and on the 260 bus to Stanley Bay. It took about half an hour to travel across the island to a relatively unpopulated and fresh environment on the coast with green-blue seas, golden sand beaches and trade wind-like breezes. The double-decker bus wormed its way around stupidly tight bends high above the water clipping trees on ... read more

I am sitting in a Hong Kong airport lounge scrambling to get all of my electronic devices recharged Before my connecting flight. Chengdu is the next destination. Usually I arrive there late at night but today I should touch down at about 1:00 pm. A friend is meeting me at the luggage claim. Where I will be staying is little of a mystery. Originally my host wanted to put me up in his offices on the edge of town near the airport. I didn't like that idea. Closer to downtown and closer to known restaurants is more to my liking. I will keep you posted.... read more
