Straight off the ferry...I get a laid back feel about this place How to have a good day off work...
Step one...the lie in! No 6.30 am alarm hurrah!
Step two...Make sure you have some sunshine, and a bit of curiosity!
and this is what may happen...
On Wednesday I had the day off after the school picnic which was lovely and I had no plans really until I woke up to a lovely blue sunny sky and decided I needed a bit of beach action! Out comes the guide book and a bit of google magic, and Lantau Island was my chosen destination.
I got the ferry across from Central to Mui Wo on Lantau Island. In typical teacher style, I saw some of my students at the MTR going out for the day with their parents. It was funny, a little Chinese girl smiled at me, and so I thought hmmm you must know me! Then her little sister turned around and I recognized her from school - there were 2 sisters and a brother from school.
So I got off the ferry on Lantau and went for a wander. It seemed a very laid back place with loads of bikes parked up. There weren't many
Saving it for later
A dead fish, just hanging out to dry along with the laundry people around which was lovely. There was a cooked food market that had a few gatherings of old people in, and I wandered across a pretty river and saw the lovely long beach! First though, I wanted to do some random wandering so chose a path and followed it into the countryside. It was a lovely little walk, just the odd person riding past on a bike. There were lots of small houses with tonnes of laundry hanging all around outside. Some of the front doors were open, and I saw a couple of old people just sitting in their house looking out. Dogs running along the path, children playing, a contrast to Mongkok thats for sure! It was a warm day, and there were some old ladies doing some sort of farming work, there were banana trees, and corn growing. Outside one place there was a fish on the washing line in a net, just being dried out in the sun! Taking it all in and appreciating the open space and lack of people was lovely. I went back to the beach, and shared it with maybe three or four people! Beautiful!
Feeling peckish, I went for lunch, and
Dragon boat
Silvermine bay beach is in the background. then went on another walk to find the waterfalls and caves. The waterfall was relatively small and involved a bit of clambering to see properly, and the cave was small and not that appealing, but the view was nice, and I had a nice walk back round in the countryside back to the ferry pier. A good explore of Mui Wo me thinks, and a very relaxing day! Nice to be somewhere so chilled and not as hectic as Mongkok for a day off.
That evening, I went to Happy Valley Race course for the fortnightly races night. It was a really good atmosphere. It's a huge earner in HK - betting is a big deal! I just went for the social really! It was good fun.
All in all a good day out!
