So, yesterday I spent the day at Lamma Island, which was pretty cool. That being said, I started it out pretty lazily, not leaving the hostel until about 8:30am (btw, Kim, that towel you gave me is
awesome). Which is better than today, I guess, since it's about 8:30am and I just woke uuup.
Anyway. I caught the ferry, and for the first time in my life, I'm pretty sure I got sea sick. So I spent the next hour after that sitting on a bench trying to convince myself that no, heading back to the hostel to go back to bed right now was
not a good idea. I think it was the fact that I would have had to get back on the boat that convinced me in the end. Weird, though. I never get motion sickness! I hope this isn't something that will be repeated.
Anyway, sitting there was kind of cool, especially when this other lady with a notebook sat down (I was sketching some of the buildings at this point) and she was scribbling away while I was sketching, and I was incredibly amused by the idea that she might be mentioning the girl sketching her surroundings in her little notebook. It was a really funny moment.
Then I had lunch in this Japanese place. I had to hide a couple of things in my napkin in my bag to throw away later, because they were kind of disgusting. But the other half of the meal was good!
So, after that, I finally set off on the hike across the island. The main path basically goes from the village of Yung Shue Wan to the village of Sok Kwu Wan. It starts off really flat and easy and then starts tilting upwards. You basically hike over this little mountain on the island. And it was very, very hot out, and me being an idiot, didn't have sunscreen or a hat. It was all paved, but I have to wonder if it would have been nicer if it had been a dirt path. Anyway, despite all the complaints, the views were amazing. Except for the giant power station on one part of the island, which I really didn't expect to be there. That was just funny, though, since all along the path there were these little signs thanking the power company for making the path. There were these really cool little alters all along the path that I climbed up to. Took lots of pictures of everything.
Overall, though, it was nice to get away from the energy of Hong Kong for a day. The far side ferry pier was really amusing, because you had to walk through all these restuarants to get to the pier and they were all like 'Hey! You missed the 2:00 ferry! Not another one till 4:00! Might as well stop for some food.' Saying 'no' politely about 14 times was a bit tiring, but I made it to the other side. Where I happily ate my orange and drank my water. Apparently they're famous for their seafood, but it's all about $20 a shot, and I wasn't hungry enough to be tempted.
Met this guy named Paul on the Pier from Ireland/Munich. He was pretty cool and he was headed to the same MTR station I was, so we hung out until we got there and then seperated. Then, after a break in the hostel, I went out for dinner (St. Alp's Teahouse
again. The food there is really good! I think they overcharged me, though. It wouldn't have been over 2 dollars though, so I didn't feel like arguing) and then headed over to the bird/goldfish/flower market. The flower and goldfish market were very nice, but I couldn't locate the bird market and my feet were hurting by this point, so I headed back.
Called Michael (third cousin of mine, for those who don't know) and I'm meeting up with him and his family for dinner tonight. Which should be fun. We chatted for a bit on the phone and he seems quite friendly, so at least there will be a lack of those awkward silences. I'm terrible with those. It'll be fun, though. We're meeting somewhere along the largest escalator in the world, which will be interesting to see.
Anyway, I'm going to head out to actually
do stuff. Maybe the space museum and a junk ride. Anyway, talk to you guys later!
