Background: Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was formally ceded by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century. Pursuant to an agreement signed by China and the UK on 19 December 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. In this agreement, China has promised that, under its "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed on Hong Kong and that Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the next 50 years.

It rained cats and dogs during the typhoon.
Where were you? You weren’t on the last ferry; you didn’t call Anthony to say you were stuck on the other side. -- I was having a glass of wine in the neighbourhood bar. Didn’t you realize it’s gone up to T8? I’ve been out searching for you. -- I thought it was still T3. I should never have let you go to Hong Kong Island alone when there was a typhoon warning posted. It is hurricane season in East Asia at the moment. Hong Kong has an efficient warning system. If there is one moving in the vicinity T1 gets [View Full Entry]

Nothing too much here, really.
Well. It's a whole different world on this side of the world. Can you believe they drive on the wrong side of the road? ;) Just Kidding But seriously. So, despite the fact that I am, in fact, a college graduate, I was unable to successfully add hours and time changes and such and so my layover was twice as long as I thought it would be. 12 hours instead of 6. Which I thought was going to be just horrible. And yet, it turned into a whole nother trip. Hong Kong is just an absolute MEGA city. It is huge. [View Full Entry]

View of the Hong Kong light show from the star ferry. Its hard to see in the photo but there are laser lights on some of the buildings.
Ok, it's been 109 days. Thanks for being patient. Just let that be a testament to how much I'm enjoying life in Hong Kong. In mid April I had my first visitor, my friend Nick. I met Nick in the arrivals hall at Hong Kong International and then promptly impressed him with my in-depth knowledge of the local bus system by getting on the wrong bus. We were busy chatting and watching the scenery and about an hour went by before I realized we were on the wrong bus. In my defense, the first half of the trip was the same [View Full Entry]

China is fun enough on your own. Throw in 3 friends with the stones to sac up and fly across the world for a visit and a journey to China's 4 corners (sort of) and it's downright epic. As my friends in Chengdu can attest, I had been dying for Aikes, Steve and Hannah coming out and seeing my life in China and I can promise, it did not fall short. Upon hearing that Gross had given up drinking (whaaaa??) I reacted the same way everyone else has over the last few months - he'll wake up in the gutter tomorrow [View Full Entry]

Lamma Island

So, yesterday I spent the day at Lamma Island, which was pretty cool. That being said, I started it out pretty lazily, not leaving the hostel until about 8:30am (btw, Kim, that towel you gave me is awesome). Which is better than today, I guess, since it's about 8:30am and I just woke uuup. Anyway. I caught the ferry, and for the first time in my life, I'm pretty sure I got sea sick. So I spent the next hour after that sitting on a bench trying to convince myself that no, heading back to the hostel to go back to [View Full Entry]

Spent a relaxing Saturday on Lamma Island, southwest by ferry from Hong Kong, hiking with Zoe and Friends, including the incomparable Mama Yue who once again hiked circles around me as we made our way across this automobile-less island, enjoying the mountainous ocean vistas as we went. The seafood at Sau Kee Restaurant in the village where we ended our hiking day was untoppable. In the few weeks remaining for me in Hong Kong, there are only two things I want to do to complete the Hong Kong tour. These are a trip to Ocean Park aquarium/amusement park (which is scheduled [View Full Entry]

A Sunday walk

Asia » Hong Kong » Lamma Island
Very cloudy and misty today. I decided to have another day out, so walked down to the ferry terminals again. All the streets and pavements were littered with Filipino girls having picnics. Apparently Sunday is the day off for the 153,000! maids in the area and they take the centre over (the Indonesian maids go to Victoria Park, I understand). I thought I'd better do something about postcards on the way (have any readers received them?) and then waited for ferry to Lamma Island at pier 4. Following a short wait, I got on the ferry to Yung Sue Wan. After [View Full Entry]

Al has already been to Hong Kong so he was kind enough to do it all over again with me, so up Victoria Peak we go in search of a perfect view of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon (where most people live). It seems that many of China’s cities are extremely smoggy we believe its due to all the pollution from the factories, but even during “Golden Week” when the factories close there is still smog all around. Its only been 10 years since Hong Kong was handed back to China however Hong Kong still maintains its own economic, social and legal [View Full Entry]
