The other day I had a friend ask me about how we decided where to stay when we were traveling internationally. My friend wondered how we found the places and knew the hotels would meet whatever standards we may have for that moment or that experience. I have booked international hotels hundreds of times, but when she asked this question I sort of stumbled over my response. How do I explain something that I have not really thought about, but rather just done? Sometimes you do lots of research. Sometimes you ask seasoned friends. Sometimes you call in the local experts. Sometimes you concede that where you lay your head that night is not much of a big detail. And sometimes you simply take a leap of faith and hope for the best. However, all the ... read more

Its day two of the honeymoon or day 3 depending on what time zone you are in. The night spent at the Holiday Inn was acceptable, after the previous day of frustration we slept pretty well. We collect our stuff and take the hotel shuttle to terminal 2 for our flight to Tbilisi. This segment went very smoothly, easy check in, security was simple. They are checking our vaccination cert. at every at every opportunity. From boarding pass to plane entry it was checked 7 times. A bit annoying and redundant. There seems to be tons of workers with nothing to do. Terminal 2 is tiny by comparison to Terminal 3. Very little shopping for Kris. We are way early for our flight so it is a pretty boring wait. The flight to Tbilisi was very ... read more

Day 4 I am up and out on the street by 7 AM, while Kris is still sleeping. Security in the hotel is already annoying everywhere I walk in the building exploring what the hotel offers I am met by a stern and unfriendly “may I help you”. My reply is no thank you just exploring the hotel. That seems to annoy them, it appears just looking around is unacceptable; you must have a destination in mind. Lots, and lots of staff with nothing to do but watch you, it’s a bit uncomfortable. Outside the hotel at 7:15 am its already 82 degrees. This part of the city is very hilly with steep inclines and declines every direction, no idea which way to go with no map so I walk up hill looking to get an ... read more

At the end of the peace bridge we enter Tbilisi old town. A really cool mix of every ethnic group that has invaded Georgia for 1,000 years. German, Russian, Jewish, Arab’s, Serbs at least 6 different churches all in this small section of Tbilisi called old town. I was told all the different groups have lived peacefully in the small area for 100’s of years. Old town is full of restaurants and shopping stalls, really an interesting place. We pick a restaurant that has a menu featuring Georgian cuisine and order what we think should be a good sampling of Georgia fare. We have already walked 8 miles today so I think any food will be good. It was at best, just ok. We ordered Kinkallaie’s that is a dumpling filled with meat or vegetables, Cucumber ... read more

Day 5 Same routine for me, I am out walking in the am, while Kris wakes up and gets ready for breakfast. I do same thing every morning and see the same unfriendly staff asking if in need any help. I am really tired of this and ask the first interrogator “Really? This is my third day here do I fing look like I need any help”? He was quite unhappy with my response. I go to the check in counter and plainly ask “why am I met everyday with your scowling staff like I am stealing something or have a bomb in my backpack. What is up with the patrolling natzy like staff watching my every move? He explains security is tight for reasons he cannot divulge, and that the staff truly wants to see ... read more

As we traveled throughout Georgia, we made a point to try as many local wines as we could. We would be at a restaurant, the waiter would ask what we wanted to drink and we would ask if they could recommend a bottle of wine…a bottle of Georgian wine. This lasted only a short time as we quickly realized, the only wine you could find in Georgia was Georgian wine. Loyalty. Confidence in your product. I like that. Plus, in those moments when we did not share a common language with our waiter, we could just point and know we were going to be sampling local wine. Before arriving in wine country, we had started to see a trend in what wines we most appreciated and even started recognizing some labels and vineyards. Wow, does that ... read more

We started our exploration of Georgian wine country by spending the day in Sighnaghi. It seems to be an obligatory stop for anyone visiting Georgia’s wine country and it had been labeled ‘The City of Love,” so why not. The ancient walled city sits high on a ridge with incredible views across the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. With its high walls and towers, Sighnaghi used to be a trading center on the Silk Road. I find this quite ironic since we couldn’t even find one cute boutique for shopping. Like many old cities, Sighnaghi offers a quaint little city center, cobblestone streets and winding alleys. As we continued to find a proper generalized label for how to describe Georgia, this little village sitting upon the mountain ridges added another complication. Many might describe Sighnaghi ... read more

I think of dogs as being a lot like men. As with men and with dogs, I have a definite “type.” You know, that look, personality or demeanor that I gravitate toward even though I like most all dogs and men. I bet you have a type also, if you think about it. Do you like tall, dark and handsome or short and fluffy? Do you like the ones that want to sleep on the couch all day or the ones that want to go to the park and play fetch? Do you want one that is tiny enough you can place it in your purse or one that is big and loyal and will protect you to it’s death? Do you like ones that are cuddly and sweet or ones that are maybe a bit ... read more

When we were in Tbilisi, we stayed at The Stamba Hotel and were blown away at the aesthetic pleasure and artistic delight that it presented in every corner of the hotel and restaurants, so it is only natural that we stayed at it‘s sister location in Kazbegi, The Rooms Hotel. Owned and decorated by the same group, The Rooms Hotel is definitely the place to stay in Stepantsminda. The hotel itself is beautiful and creative, but it’s location is also superb. Surrounded by the Caucasus Mountain range, the hotel is situated with unobstructed views of the glory of Northern Georgia. To be fair, one could spend the entire visit sitting on the observation deck simply staring at the ever changing views provided by the mountains, clouds and sunlight. The rooms were equipped with balconies and views ... read more

When you think of wine and it’s origins, I am willing to bet my bank account that your first thought is not of The Republic of Georgia. Don’t be embarrassed, Georgia was certainly not my first thought if I had to name where wine began, but now that I have been there, tasted it and witnessed the wine making process, I am an enlightened wine drinker. Or at least I am a wine drinker. I know what you are thinking right now. “Just how much wine were you drinking when you wrote this?” It’s a fair point. I get it. I was skeptical when I first read about Georgia being the birthplace of wine. This country that is smaller than the state of West Virginia, has seven different climate zones, 49 different soil types and over ... read more
