This morning we were packed and ready to go to the airport and home. Glyn ordered a Bolt to get us to the airport with no hassle. Sadly I was unable to see Kiki the cat to say goodbye, but instead met with the cat she fights with. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived in Georgia and it has been very good. There’s never been a dull moment and I never ran out of things to do and see. There’s been a wide range of history from ancient to very recent. I’ve also learned a lot about what it’s like living in a part of the world that’s often in conflict. As one tour guide pointed out, it’s the politicians at war, not the people and that they hate Russia but love ... read more

There’s a big, golden roof atop a Cathedral that can been seen from all over Old Tbilisi, so we had to go sooner or later. Today was the day. Following Google maps, we came across an underground walkway that had very good street art. This led to the pedestrian part of a road bridge that showcased winning images from the International Kolga Awards Exhibition. It was quite fascinating with signs in English explaining the background for each. Naturally the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi was uphill, then a bunch of steps to boot. It’s rather new, having only been completed in 2004, so in pristine condition. At 87.1 metres high, 70.4 metres long and 64.7 metres wide, it’s one of the largest religious buildings in the world. Despite being free to get in, there weren’t many ... read more

If you read my blog on Monday, you’ll know that my hubby and I got very ripped off by a taxi driver in Tbilisi. He charged us 150 laris (£47.95)for a journey that should have been no more than 15 laris (£4.79). I’ve been annoyed at myself for letting him get away with it. So when I saw him in Meidan Square this morning, chatting with another driver, I plucked up the courage to confront him and Glyn followed me close behind. I took taxi driver’s photo and one of his number plate before he realised who I was. Obviously he tried to fob me off, with more nonsense about being a tourist taxi driver and there being traffic (there’s always traffic in Tbilisi). Now I knew he was lying but recently had this confirmed on ... read more

Day 14 Georgia. Fri 23rd Sep Calling the cops and chronicles on our last day in Georgia Another late start on our last day here as, AGAIN, we didn’t set alarms. We walked down to Meidan Square to order a Bolt as it’s a bit of a maze where our guesthouse is. Who should we see on the square but our rip-off taxi driver from the other day. He pretended not to remember us but Claire was straight in there, soon accompanied by me. He used the usual excuses then offered to take us somewhere for free, then offered to take us to the airport for free tomorrow, then offered us 50 lari back…. He had rippped us off for about 130 lari and obviously knew he was in the wrong. Claire went to call the ... read more

Day 13 Georgia. Thurs 22nd Sep A cable car, a Bolt and the Georgian Banksy in Georgia We have done our last trip so no alarms today!! I was awake for 8:30 but Claire managed to sleep for about an hour longer. This must be what it’s like for other people who do ‘normal’ holidays….??? I just felt lazy to be honest. The rest didn’t last long though. We were soon walking up (of course ‘up’) to the Holy Trinity cathedral which is the best religious place we have visited here. Lots of clunkers walking really slowly towards it as usual just to ruin your photos but I guess having a couple of clunkers in shot gives some scale to the size of the building. With a walkway reminiscent of the Taj Mahal leading up to ... read more

Day 10 Georgia. Monday 19th Sep Getting ripped off on our day off There’s usually something that goes wrong on our holidays whether it be delayed flights, luggage going missing, me getting ill, being overcharged….simething. We had no trips booked today so Claire declared it a national holiday, for the two of us anyway. I was promised some relaxation time so this really was a special day! The first plan was to visit the ethnographic museum which is a bit out of town. We’d been to something similar in Romania and enjoyed it. Getting a bus involved getting another travel card and putting enough money on it for each of us for a bus, then working out the bus and where to get off…. It looked a bit complicated so it seemed worth it to pay ... read more

Today was a relaxation day, one to recharge after all the recent day trips, ready for more tomorrow. Some years ago, I’d planned our itinerary for our self tour around Japan, ensuring not a minute was wasted. By the last few days, I was sitting in a park in Tokyo, absolutely exhausted and looking forward to the flight home so I could sit still for hours. It was awful feeling like that, when in a place as exciting as Tokyo, so since I’ve always tried to ensure we have chill days. It is meant to be a holiday after all! So no alarms were set and we didn’t leave the accommodation until around 10.30! It’s a nice enough place, but not somewhere we’d want to hang around at all day.My plan was too have a slow ... read more

Having spent a lot of wedge on the 24 hour Hop On Hop Off bus yesterday, we were determined to do more hopping today before time ran out. We meant to get off at Rose Revolution Square (named after a recent revolution that spilled no blood) but it was unnoticeable and we got off somewhere on Kote Marjanishvili St, as it looked interesting. But it wasn’t that interesting, in fact we came across our first McDonalds. We had previously noted that there weren’t many American food chains in Tbilisi, but I guess the old town was the wrong area for that. However there’s lots of Georgian eateries in old town, which I hope means that’s what tourists want as opposed to the things they can get back home easily. Walking down to the Dry Bridge Market, ... read more

Day 4 Georgia. Tuesday 13th Sept. What goes up in Tiblisi…. This isn’t a place for disabled people or for anyone who struggles going up steep hills or steps. The pavements are, I think, based on the Caucasian mountains and the hills on Mount Everest. If you’re in a wheelchair, forget it as you’ll barely make it out of your hotel before they stick some obstacle in your way. I wonder what they do with all the disabled people here? Maybe there’s an area somewhere outside the city that’s totally flat….?? Either way, disabled tourists…..forget it. If you’re here to lose some weight though, you came to the right place. If you’re looking for a challenge, Tiblisi is your town. There will usually be something interesting at the end but you will have to put in ... read more

Day 3 Georgia. Monday 12th Sept. How many things can you do in one day in Tiblisi? So the first plan today was to go to the Magti shop to get a SIM card. This would be great for finding our way round, finding places of interest and vegan cafes and stuff. I took a picture of the Google maps directions and was all ready to set off when…. ……Claire happened….. ‘So I thought we’d start off at the fortress then go this church then….oh yeah, the SIM cards….we can do that after…’ You may remember that the fortress is high up but Claire assured me that she’d found a short route and I’m convinced she said it wasn’t too steep. We stood at the bottom and she was lost but decided that we should walk ... read more
