A little courtyard is the first thing you come too upon entering the Potala. The is where photography became officially illegal.

Just to show you the age and style of the inside of the Potala. The entire building is filled with ancient pillars and carvings just like these.

After walking through the entire Potala (well, the parts that were open to tourists that is) we came out on the far side. On the right of this photo, in the far background, you can see Sera Monastery where we climbed the mountain and explored many temples.

These workers were restoring the Potala using traditional techniques. They added small amounts of sand to the walls, wet them with some liquid, and then slowly beat the mixture into the wall so as to make it stick.

Walking around Sera Monastery, we found a lot of quirky old temples hidden away. This old one was closed but the entranceway was amazing just by itself.

In the background you can see a common Tibetan image that looks like a chess board. Reading across the lines, down the lines, or on diagonals yeilds Tibetan sayings.
