Day 6 - 9 Shanghai 1/25/2011 - 1/28/2011
It's been a while. Sorry.
Actually, this is when my journal kind of stopped. I was doing relatively well, and then I just gave up writing down what happened. But here's my best attempt at remembering what happened.
Shanghai was where I realized I needed new shoes. Mine were STINKY. Keli will attest to that.. and I'm sure if you asked Buster and Amy they'd probably be like, "So that's what that smell was..." ha. Anyway, I know the first day we bought jackets and new shoes for me. I think Keli and I both got Columbia jackets, and I got Timberland shoes.. now when I use these name brands, I use them very loosely. China is the King (or Queen.. whichever you prefer) of knock off goods, and I love it. We went to these awesome places where there were just lots and lots of people all in one place selling tons of knock off stuff.
Really, I'm just kinda gonna hit some highlights that I remember.
I know we hit up Carrefour and bought Doritos. Don't judge when I tell you this next part. We each
bought a bag of Nacho Cheesier Doritos and half a Subway sandwich.. and ate ALL of it for dinner one night. Seriously, don't judge. I don't remember the last time I had Doritos.
We stayed with Jessica who had two boys, and I think they each had a hamster, but there may have only been one. I never actually saw the other one.. I just saw a cage. I liked to get the hamster out and hold it til it started biting me. I think Keli fed it some granola, and I feel like it kinda didn't do anything for a few days after that.
We slept late most days.. we were kinda tired, and the place we were staying was AWESOME.. so we enjoyed sleeping in an actual soft bed.
We visited The Bund, and that was fun. We took pictures in our new jackets and hung out there for a little while. It is really pretty with all the lights at night. I feel like it may have been kinda hazy or something, so it wasn't the best.
There was this one time that Keli tried to get a t-shirt from this girl (get
= buy.. that sounded like she was kinda trying to steal it or something...), and the girl was telling her this insanely expensive price, so she tried bargaining. Apparently this girl was offended, and she started yelling at Keli.. for real, it was insane. She was like, "You rubbish country!! Poor country!!!" Like yelling as we walked away. It. Was. NUTS. Keli was like, "I didn't even tell her where I was from." haha. She found a shirt for cheaper.
One night we were sitting on our bed, and Keli was laughing or something, and she kinda shoved me.. well I was on the edge of the bed, and I sure did lose my balance and fall off. It was a quiet landing, luckily, because it was late and everyone was asleep except us. I was laughing so hard that I wasn't making any noise. Keli said she saw my legs in the air, but she missed the actual fall. It was hilarious.
This is when I got my passport! It was awesome. We had it sent to the hostel where we were supposed to stay, and let's be real, that was probably the coolest hostel we would
have stayed in. There were foreigners everywhere. I was a little sad, but then I realized that we were staying in a really awesome place, and I got over it.
In addition to the Doritos and Subway, we ate at Carl's Jr., Whisk (Italian), we bought Reese's peanut butter cups and cookies and cream chocolate.. It was really awesome.
There was this awesome little store called Pines or something where we got Dr. Pepper and Cream Soda.. it was like we were in America in that store.. prices and all. There was cake mix, icing, chips, cookies, allllll kinds of stuff. It was glorious.
We decided to go to Suzhou right after I got the passport, so we went to the train station, and this really nice officer showed us where to go, and there was an English counter. We were pretty pumped about that. It was so super easy getting tickets. 😊
I pretty much felt like I was in America while in Shanghai. I. Loved. It. I feel like there could be some other things that happened while we were there. I'll give Keli time to read it, and she can tell me if
I forgot anything good. I'll add it to the next update.. which will happen soon, I promise.
