Arrived!Carly, Craig and winter's 'official' arrival all coincided!! But C & C feel the city sans leaves, is just as pretty as summer! And they'd know!
Hi all,
This year's Christmas, a wealth of good will and fun times, was one for the books...but like many Shanghai experiences, unique as much for what did as didn't happen. But thanks to perseverence, and a few Christmas miracles, we enjoyed a very memorable holiday.... despite some ups and downs on the dragon's tail!
For example, five days prior to the big day, Carly and Craig's expected 3:00 p.m. arrival was delayed almost 12 hours...and would have been even longer if the first leg from Washington D.C. to Chicago hadn't mysteriously been allowed to take-off (even though an earlier flight had been cancelled due to snowstorms in Chicago.) But after landing (in a blizzard!!) they discovered that their connecting flight was delayed -- as were many other Christmas flights from Chicago -- and happily, after only a few hours delay they took off again. But half-way through their second 14-hour stretch, whilst 'enjoying' their meal (a plan to upgrade the food apparently backfired as rubbery chicken and partially thawed food passes for 'kosher') they were surprised to hear the captain announcing that smoke had been spotted and they would have to return, which required him to jettison fuel...oh,
and that this was the first time he had ever attempted such a maneuver in his 25-year career.
So just before the point-of-no-return over the Arctic they turned back, and despite the pilot's concerns (!)landed safely. When we awoke on Saturday morning expecting them to be only hours away, we signed onto United Airlines and were shocked to discover they were now in San Francisco (!!) due to "airplane malfunction" (!!!) Instead of 3:00 p.m. their ETA was now 1:00 a.m., as the last stretch from San Francisco to Shanghai was 13 hours -- only one hour shorter than the original Chicago/Shanghai journey....it appeared that they were going to have to make the trip over twice!!
Miraculously, after all of the delays, aborted flights, snowstorms, etc. they were able to sleep on the entire last leg, and arrived fresh as daisies. Wish we could have said the same for us...but at least we had a kindly taxi driver named Rick, who drove us to Pudong Airport, and even waited with us to drive us all back. Happy to have them finally home, we all talked until the wee hours, and everyone hit the sack around 5:00 a.m. Oh
well...at least, we figured, we'd all be jetlagged together.
And because this was Carly and Craig's second visit to Shanghai, we were able to revisit all of their favorite haunts...so it was Christmas Eve in Cotton's, where we were treated to a choice of lamb, salmon or steak entrees. The ever-accommodating manager had reserved our favorite table in front of the fire, and even threw in two complimentary bottles of red wine....but had forgotten our request for turkey. Oh well, there was always Christmas day dinner we figured...except our plan to relive our ''turkey-to-go" plan backfired because dinner with all the trimmings was not on offer again anywhere.
So it was off to discover some new haunts....and we found one: "South Beauty" a local "famous" Chinese restaurant where the Christmas spirit was alive and well with carols playing throughout the night and all staff sporting sparkling Santa hats. We'd expected a Cantonese cuisine, but were instead downing copious Ting Dao's to offset spicey Sichuan!!
During the course of the holiday we've also taken in all the sights and lights the city has to offer...and have discovered a number of new haunts (i.e. "Pho" an aptly named Vietnamese
Yes! But as for the city's tallest tree...
restaurant and an equally delicious Japanese restaurant, both in the surprisingly enlarging Art Street) and in the process have been delightfully surprised, once again, by the large amount of Christmas spirit and good will that Shanghai has to offer.
And as the pics attest....despite delays, no snow nor turkey....Christmas, Carly, Craig, cold, Cotton's, Chinese Christmas dinner (we can't think of anymore "c's") was, as we've said, truly one for the books. Our Christmas Eve in front of the fire at Cotton's was even so pleasant we plan to return for New Year's Eve...and our spicey Sichuan Chinese Christmas day meal with Carly and Craig was fitting...perhaps, along with homemade egg nog and mulled wine, we're making some new Christmas traditions, i.e. Christmas 2009 in Shanghai anyone?! :-)
Meanwhile, here's to Christmas 2008...and Happy New Year from all of us....Amy, Roel, Carly and Craig.
Thanks Santa!...for leading us to an amazing new Japanese restaurant in Art Street...
Art StreetHands down the funkiest spot in Shanghai for cafes, boutiques and art...is growing over night it sees.
And Amy in her......great Banana Republic sweater, Art Street Pashima, and fantastic hand-made scarf by Johanna!
Shanghai through the DecadesLook closely, and you can see Shanghai's architectural progression from the roaring '20's through to today's 00's.
Dumplings anyone?Craig was on the lookout for the ultimate dumpling...and he thinks he's found it on Snack Street!
Brown SugarTaipei's hotspot has hit Shanghai, as we discovered in our painting the town red...and green :-)

Thanks once again for sharing your adventures with us, Amy and Roel. I loved seeing the pictures of Craig-er and Carly! Craig-er looks quite cosmopolitan in that beard ;-) We had enough ice here in IL for everyone; it made the ground look white. I sure hope our paths cross again--how about this summer in MB??
Wow! Love it. It was great to see your latest blog and talk to you all on skype -very cool. It looks like you both had an adventure getting there but I'm glad you did -here we kept seeing spots on the CBC of people waiting like 6-7 days?!! I mean at that point (or way before) why not just go home? Maybe they're connecting or something? Anyhoo glad you made it! Did the captain actually come on and say that he needed to jettison fuel and that he’d never done anything like this before?!!! LOL. Did he then manoeuvre the plan upside-down to deploy? Picturing this is really fun for me. Sorry. Buckle up I guess. I'm not going to lie-I had to look up that word! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_dumping
Well you ‘fantastic 4’ over there --I’m wishing you a warm and safe new year and that all of your wildest dreams will come true! Safe flight back Carly and Craig. Got your message about your friend coming and would love to entertain etc. Where do you think I should take them?
Love,
Chalo
Love the pictures!!! Esp. Amy sitting in the chair and Carly and Craig in their robes. LOL.
Thanks so much for sharing your adventures! I love to see what life is like in China. Don't know if Gary and I will ever get there so am living vicariously through your China 'blog'!:) Hope your toe is better!
As always, love your mail. Keep it up.
Sherry
This year they had yet a new techie way to track Santa around the Globe. It was very cute, hundreds of little tiny Santas making his way from east to west. Anyway it sounds as if Carly and Craig's flight plans were just as complicated! Photos are great. Did you like your books and Christmas cake? Happy New Year!
Hi Cindy & Jay, It's great to hear from you....thanks for adding to our Xmas in Shanghai. Happy new year, and I hope we're all slated to meet up in 2009. Amy & Roel
Hey Chalo, Your comment was great to receive -- just in time for our New Year's--and yours. Being ahead we got to watch the clock strike 12 on both sides of the globe...it appears that Shanghai and New York are equally cold!! Carly and Craig's safe flight back has come and gone without a hitch...thank goodness they didn't need to relive any "jettisoning" or such :-) Happy 2009 one and all...Love, Amy & Roel
....for the compliments! But you should see the ones that didn't make the cut :-) Amy & Roel
Hey Sherry, I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying Shanghai through the blog...I'm trying to record every detail so that we'll get to relive it that way, too, when we return. Hope our paths cross this summer, all the best, Amy & Roel
...and yes, we will try to keep it going. Everytime I think there's nothing left to be said, S-I-SH happens! (Something in Shanghai) :0 Amy & Roel
Hey Carrie, Thanks for contributing your comment...and gifties...to our Xmas :-) Your book "China Lover" is particularly apt (i can definitely relate) and I already can't put it down! Also I think you, Carly and Craig have introduced a whole new Xmas tradition with your gift of Italian Pannocote -- delicious!! I'll take that over Xmas cake any time :-) Look for your gifts on the Carly and Craig return express...Happy new year! Love, Amy & Roel
Sister Woman....how mendacious! Does brother man say the same?? Big Momma and Big Daddy
