Zhujiajiao is one of a few well-reserved small canal towns in the surrounding region of Shanghai. If you have ever watched movie Mission: Impossible III, you will know what I am talking about: Old Town, or Canal Town/City.

Suzhou is the best known canal city in China, probably to the world, which is a short train or bus ride from Shanghai. Once a favored abode of retired scholars and officials, it combines he attractions of boat rides and ornamental gardens with centuries of history.

Zhujiajiao is a smaller town of the similar water-way landscape to the west of Shanghai, about 37 km away from my home in downtown shanghai. A day trip to Zhujiajiao is a good getaway spot from Shanghai for some greener feeling.

My parent visited me from Guangzhou in May (BTW, May is one of the best-weather months in Shanghai.) We took a day trip to Zhujiajiao. Three transportation choices: 1) drive by yourself; 2) take a taxi, about 300-500 RBM a day depending on your ability to bargain; 3) take a tour bus from Shanghai Travel Transportation Center (inside the 80,000-people stadium). We picked No.3 and spent less than 30 RMB and 3 hrs

for round trip.

We walked around the town along the canals. My mom really wanted to take the boat ride, but we didn't find a good time to do it. We were busy at shopping, lunch and garden visiting. It is about 35-50 RMB per ride, not cheap but could be more pleasant when it is too crowded on road.

There are two types of tickets: basic one (10 RMB/person) and premier one (60 RMB, which can be admitted to all "attractions"). Believe me or not, you will find the 60 RMB one a rip off.

Ok, let's experience the "canal town", which is hometown to a lot of great scholars in China. NBA hero Yaoming is one of the biggest celebrities in 21 century.
