My Pad
Where I lived! My 'pad'...
On 31 August 2006 my South Korean room mate, Mr. Kwon, moved into my apartment. At this point you may be asking yourself, "Was that trouble for me?" Think about this for a moment. When I stayed with my cousin, during my brief time in Minnesota, I thought I took up allot of room. In Dawukou, however, my room mate and I still have plenty of room in the apartment. Heck, I have room for two more roommates, even more. That is if you don't mind sleeping on the floor.
The last time I ended newsletter #1 I was falling asleep and remained so from 2 P.M. until 6 A.M. the next morning. That was due to the effect of airline food, illness and massive time change. Now I shall give you a tour of my apartment. Please keep your hands and limbs inside the bus for the duration of this tour.
Glancing at the outside of my building and even at the stairwells, one would think that the apartments look little better. Such is not the case. Would you believe that I live in a gated community in Dawukou, China? Laugh all you want, I have evidence to back up my claim. Also, believe it or not, my apartment is rather nice despite the look of the outside.
I live on the top floor or my building which means I get lots of exercise. I am grateful that I did not have to carry my furniture up those stairs. Upon entry into my apartment you will find the multi-purpose room to your right. At first it was my computer room but now it is my room mates' sleeping quarters. From there the restroom/ laundry room is to your right. 1
The next larger area is the living room which is spread out. To the far right is the enclosed porch where I hang my clothes to dry. In this living room there is a lot of furniture. Two single blue seats compliment the larger blue couch. There is also a futon which functions both as a bed and couch. There is also a coffee table and television stand; with a t.v. set! (Which I can play video games on!). The only down side is that there is one English channel, like my family and I had in Germany. However on some channels they have English Subtitles for movies and other channels have Tom & Jerry cartoons. Sorry about the detour... 2
South of the living room is the kitchen which is furnished with a gas stove, microwave and sink. There is also a refrigerator and cooler, upright, unit. However, my fridge is rather empty. My fellow teachers and I have been invited out to dinner just about every night since we have been here. The food is great!
West of the living room is my bedroom, which is huge. The queen (possibly king) size bed is in the middle of the room. It is nice to stretch out, although my feet still hang off the end! Also in the room are a huge closet and two nightstands. There is also an air conditioner in my room as well. Outside of my bedroom is the dining area with a table and water fountain (like the kind found in office buildings). This area also leads to the upstairs.
The upstairs is great for guests but is a part of the roof. While I can still get around up there on two feet, I normally do not go up there often. Once you have reached the top of the stairs are doors number 1 and 2. Behind door number 1 is a bedroom for a little kid (or house guest), complete with bed and wardrobe. Behind door number 2 is a rather large room which can contain two small beds (but there is only one) and does contain another wardrobe and air conditioner. The northern wall of this room contains doors number 3 which is to the left, and 4 which is to the right. Door #4 leads to yet another bedroom, completely furnished. Door #3 leads to the open air balcony.
Watch your head! Now you are standing on the balcony. Before you lies a huge, green park. People walk around it and kids play in it. In this city it is nice to have this view. This view is also what I will leave you with as this tour comes to an end. Next time I will tell you about the dinners I've eaten. Trust me, it'll be great!
1. I think we've all seen a bathroom before.
2. I had a full house on Saturday 2 September, yeah!
