So what is the purpose of the lion guardian? Who are they guarding from the stores?

The Stone Lions
Lions were believed to have powerful protective benefits and used to be in front of Imperial palaces, tombs, and homes of the wealthy. They are usually in pairs with a male holding his paw over the world and a female with her paw over a cub on its back, symbolizing the cycle of life. They also represent yin and yang (female yin, male yang. The female guards those inside and the male guards the building. Now it is used more as a symbolic or decorative thing.
