Longji Rice Terraces:

I was really excited about this part of the trip as I had read a bit about it. The rice terraces were about 4 hours away from Yangshuo. So once again quite an early start. We did most of the journey by public bus, which was quite fun. A few quick facts: The rice terraces offer breath taking views all year round, the coulors of the rice terraces depends on the season.Summer they are really green and lush (we were there at this time), late autum the terraces turn yellow, winter white with snow. The altitudes of the terraces vary bettween 300 meters to 1100 meters with slopes between 26 degrees and 35 degrees. The local people are the Zhuang and Yao people. All the older women have really long hair that they knot up on top of their heads a. They also wear the most brilliant coulor clothes.

We arrived at the terraces around 2pm. It is quite a strange place as there are these beautiful hills and views but then quite a few tourists walking about. Fortunatley our Guest house was around 25 minutes walk away so we were not based in what seemed like the main section and therefore were the only tourists there. After a hearty lunch some of us set off for a little trek in rice terraces. It turned out to be quite an adventre actually. The terraces are split up into 3 different walking rotes. I think we did 1 and 2 that evening. After a while we had to decide if we wanted to go any further up the hill (a very big hill). We had to tink about a few things first though:
1. it was getting dark, as it was 6.30pm.
2. The path was getting very tricky and there was a steep drop on one side
3. If we went anyfurther we would get into the fog clouds and would not be able to see.
4. It started to rain.
So, of course we went up higher (with a little encouragment from Michael). We were going for about 15 mins when it really started to pour down. Longji is often very foggy and rainy, we really found this out. It did start getting a bit too scary for our liking so we did turn back. But I am so glad we did go the extra mile or so. Finally made it back in one piece but very, very wet and gagging for a ice cold beer that we drank with sheer ease
Oh yeah and a big shout out to the posing dog on the rock. He could even put Paul out of business.
