The Galaxy casino MacauThe Galaxy casino MacauThe Galaxy casino Macau

This one had a bit of old world charm
We just completed a visa run across the Chinese border at Macau. This time we only stopped for a couple of hours- enough to see the some of Macau's casinos and to spot the sea.
Macau has 95% Chinese inhabitants, 2 % Portuguese and 3% Macanese- a mix of both. I spent much of the short trip trying to spot the Macanese part of society without success- or maybe I saw them and didn't know it.
Another fact is that Macau's territory is only 27.3 km squared, given to the Portuguese some time soon after the 16th Century for services rendered- they helped clear the rampant piracy from the area!
As Macau is only 2 hours away by bus, it's convenient for all things visa related, but Hong Kong is not that much further and is always calling- hope we get time to make a visit.

In other news, we have moved to another apartment- spacoius and clean.
We've also bought two bicycles to get about on in our time off. Went road tested these last weekend and found a duck/fish farm in one- the Chinese- interprising as ever!

I keep imagining our family and loved ones all travelling like us- and actually with us- but then if everyone left their home countries things would change quite rapidly- no-one working and paying taxes to keep the West a peg above the East. The mind boggles. What really stops people from travelling- fear of change?; love of routine? Or is it patriotism to help and bolster our home countries' economies. I'm sure that there are a thousand reasons for this, none of which I currently subscribe to, because, as we are proving, little by little, travel can actually be a self sustaining activity, paying for it's self- I hope that this does'nt turn out to be an overinflated statement, but I think it's true and possible.
So back home, I suspect Big Brother is dominating the TV as it does every Summer. We get a repreive from Big Broither based news/gossip. Meanwhile I'll leave you with a few pics from our lives in the last week.

The first view of Macau after the land border- the first time I saw these huge blocks of flats, I felt like a yokle(lauchis) from the countryside.

we are all on journeys.... I always thought it odd that some have absolutely no inkling to travel at all.... Its a state of being, once you'v taken that step and the ball is rolling...thanks for the wee insight into Macau. You're being well looked after indeed with such a swish appartment. Indeed may your beings be well....

Happiness
I've been thinking about the need to travel. I am doing a lesson on happiness tonight and I found this quote whilst making the lesson "The foolish man seeks happiness in the distance, the wise grows it under his feet." James Oppenheim. I guess happiness is to be found where one is right now:) Thank you for following our blog and your comments- it makes us feel maybe not so far from home. Love to all, Steven.
