Rainy and nothing going on. Zhuhai Adventure / Rainy village
After work on the Monday we thought it would be nice to catch the underground to a new party of the city to find some dinner, the first place we went turned out to be just factories so we went another stop further, the rain was really coming down at this point and we were in a place called Lijiu village, a really strange place made up completely of alleys with lots of little food places on the corners. It took us ages to find a suitable place to eat and we walked for a long time getting quite lost, we walked through a small food market where they had all sorts of different meats, like turtles and there was even a man cutting up live frogs.
Eventually we were to hungry and I really had to find a toilet so we just chose a random place, it didn’t have picture menus so I just closed my eyes at pointed at one item. Turned out to be a pretty standard noodle soup, which we accidentally get a lot here. When they showed me where the toilet was I was quite confused and didn’t understand,

still rainy and still nothing going on. it was just a hole in the ground in a very dark cupboard in the kitchen.
Very interesting. To get back to the underground we knew we would never find our way back so we took a little rickshaw type thing (the first I’ve seen in china)
Because we had the Tuesday and Thursday off we decided it would be good to do abit of travelling and see abit of china. The people in the office recommended Zhuhai, which is a smaller sea city only 2 hours south by bus (we wanted a train but apparently it was an option) the bus ride down was fairly uneventful except for the huge amount of beggars at the train station, but we’ve got that sorted now.
It was still raining heavily when we left so we couldn’t see much of what was around us because of both the smog and the clouds but it was great getting into slightly more rural areas even though I think we never actually left the city, that its almost just an extension of the bigger city (Guangzhou) when we arrived in Zhuhai, it was still raining but that wasn’t much of an issue, for lunch
Lijiu
we got out at exit F and walked into that mess of buildings. we thought we would try a Chinese fast food chain called Kungfu which is about as big as KFC and Mcdonalds here. Was quite expensive and the food was just the same as the small Chinese street restaurants.
Since we had no idea where the hotel was we just got off the bus where it felt close, it wasn’t we had to take a taxi for another half hour, none of the taxis knew where to go but the man that took us called a friend and turned out to be really good.
When we got to the hotel we were quite surprised at how nice it was after being greeted by a line of guards and bellboys. The hotel was huge and we spent a long time exploring it,
For the afternoon we went and did alittle shopping but didn’t find anything so just went back to the hotel, where we swam and played ping-pong, a lot of fun.
The next day we decided to check and see when the bus was leaving before getting breakfast, the lady at the station said it left at 1.20 but it was already 1.30 so there was no time
for breakfast (I guess it would be more lunch at that time) and we were straight back to Guangzhou. On the way out of Zhuhai we saw a luge so now are super keen to go back.
On the way into Guangzhou the bus driver started yelling to us saying we had to get off the bus because this was where we wanted to go, we knew where we were and we knew it wasn’t our stop, but still he didn’t understand so we got off, he had dropped us off on the highway so we had to walk along tho road for some time before we got to the underground to take us home.
Back in Panyu (very hungry by this point) we found a restaurant we hadn’t tried, a great Muslim place with really good food, definitely our new favourite.
That evening we wanted to have a look at a shopping street known as one of the best in china, so another hour and a half on the metro and we shopped for awhile, I bought a few things I probably don’t really need. When we got home I googled the street again and discovered
that we hadn’t gone to the shopping street at all but just a random street so now we have to go back.
The next evening we found a restaurant that has wontons and sweat chilli sauce, I got the waitress to write down what it was so I can order it again, its still quite a struggle to find spring rolls but today Kate brought us 3 boxes of spring rolls into work J
Now I have class, my last class on Thursday (my first proper class) nobody came except Kate who has now joined my classes to learn English, but today a lot of people have signed up which should be fun, apparently only new students can join our class and the existing ones are not allowed, so it will be fun working with all new people.
Oh and I bought a great mosquito net, its like a tent on my bed, very cool.
during class my students explained to me how to say satay in chinese, a great development (class was lots of fun)
