We got a bus from Hong Kong to Guangzhou in China - luckily no problems with our visa and straight through. We were dropped near a metro station and followed directions to get to our hostel. After checking in we went to Shamian Island which is a former colonial island of France and England. It was very quaint and we had a nice dinner and paid 3 times too much for a can of Sprite!! Another currency to get used to!!!

The following day we had a wander around Yuexiu Park where we saw the Five Rams statue, Zhenhai Tower and the lake. After the park we visited the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King. This was a museum and tomb of a king from 111BC. That evening we had dinner using our new technique of point to a picture/word in our guide book and hope for the best!!!

As Guangzhou was our first stop in China, it was our first experience of being stared at by locals! We naively thought that China had many tourists but we rarely saw any other westerners and became a bit of a freak show!! It's not like it's a nice type of staring with a smile, but craning of the neck and completely stopping to glare. Some even try and take photos on the sly!! We also thought we could get by without speaking any Chinese but we soon realised that no one speaks English and no menus are in English and so it makes things very hard!!!

hahaha, u guys were at the wrong resteraunts! if you want to get english menu, you need to go to the newer part of the city (like Tianher area) and a higher class resteruant. they are normally better decorated, and they have english on their menu. but if you want to eat really traditional and local food, haha, you need a chinese friend. :)
