June 7th 2012

Wednesday, June 6th, we had the day off because of some emergency situation at our office. So Fernanda, Jeff and I decided to head to the Forbidden City to finally be tourists. Since I had a flight to catch later that day, we went first thing in the morning so we’d maximize our time there. Which of course meant that we were crammed into the subway. Which then resulted in us losing Jeff. We tried to reconnect with him but in the end Fernanda and I wandered by ourselves. The day was reeeeeeeeeeeeeally polluted which unfortunately made visibility kinda craptastic but it was still a spectacular sight.

The forbidden city is the former palace area in Peking. It’s huge and it’s awe-inspiring. Definitely worthy of being BJ’s top tourist attraction. This is one of those situations where it’s best to let the pictures tell the story so please enjoy browsing through my picture collection.

The one story I will tell is the story of how famous I am. Now I've complained in previous entries about being stared at by Chinese people. Well, my trip to the Forbidden City took that one step further - a total of 9 people asked to have their photo taken with yours truly! Fernanda captured some of the hilariousness for us all to enjoy. A highlight was a girl that stood up on a ledge so she could be tall like me hahaha. There were other white people there, but I guess because we're young and female we were more popular. Also funny was when a girl asked to have my photo taken...with her boyfriend. Random hahaha.

Since everyone was so forward about asking for photos I decided it was time to get some photos of my own. So I got a picture with a couple with matching shirts!!! It's my pride and joy. THEIR SHIRTS SAY LOVE STAR COUPLES!!! IT MAKES ME SOO HAPPY!!

We walked around for about 4 hours and then we were done with the place. Fernanda decided to go on to some other sites in the area and I went back to the hotel to finish packing for my trip to Hai Ning.

This blog was created in 2007 when I headed to Perth, Western Australia for a year-long study abroad program. There are still lots of great stories and pictures from that trip, though I got way behind on my blogging and the stories end abruptly in September, 2007 (I was in Aus until Christmas Eve!) Although I've traveled a lot since then, I left this blog in a state of neglect for several years. But I figured another school-related international adventure was a reason to get things started again! In August 2011, I packed up my car and made the drive from my hometown of Toronto to the sunny ... full info
