Wendy in Front of Famous Restaurant
This restaurant is famous for its Peking Duck. The food was absolutely amazing! April 16, 2010
Today is my last day in China. I fly out tomorrow on April 17th at 12 pm and land in San Diego on April 17th at 12:22 pm. . .it’s because I cross the International Dateline from West to East. . .I wish my flight was only 22 minutes long! I’m grateful, though, that I’m not in Europe. . .I’ve been reading on CNN about how the volcanic ash from Iceland has been causing all flights in and out of Europe to be cancelled for the next few days.
I’ve been so busy the past couple of days finishing up reports and preparing a presentation for the Vice President and Project Team at the company I’ve been work with here in Beijing. I did not know I would be doing a presentation. . .I’m a bench chemist. . .I don’t wear fancy clothes to work. . .who knows what I might spill on them! It didn’t even occur to me when I was packing to bring any business professional clothes. I brought lab clothes and ‘going out’ clothes. So this morning I was stuck trying to decide which would be worse. . .giving the presentation in
Duck Soup
This soup was very, very spicy and you can also see how lovely all the other dishes were. jeans or in the dress pants I wear when I go out (the pants are short so they show off my foot and ankle tattoo). Mmmmm. . .jeans or tattoo? I decided to go with jeans. The presentation was really well received. The Project Team had encountered many challenges over the past three weeks, but we were able to work very well together and come up with some creative solutions. I highlighted these achievements and I think everyone agreed that we had accomplished a great deal of work during our time together.
Afterwards the VP took us all into Beijing to a restaurant that specializes in Peking Duck. Peking Duck is prepared by some special method that is actually trademarked. There were also many, many other delicious dishes that were brought out to us. I even accidentally tried duck feet. I didn’t know it was a duck foot when I picked it up with my chopsticks. . .it was de-boned and looked like white cabbage. Sensing my confusion, the Vice President (who was seated next to me) told me what it was and offered me some special mustard sauce to dip it. Seriously. . .what was I going to
do at that point? I smiled and dipped it in the sauce and ate it. I have a new rule. . .ask what something is before picking it up with my chopsticks!
Danbo and I came back to the hotel for a brief rest and then went out for a final dinner with the entire lab group. This has been such a great experience and I truly feel like I’ve made some new friends. They have invited me to come back to Beijing and I have invited them to come to San Diego if they get the chance. I’m planning to continue this blog for a few more weeks after my return to San Diego so that my new friends here can get an idea of what my life is like in California. They’ll get to see where I work and the places I like to go to and what kind of people I call ‘friends’ in San Diego.
Alright. . .I’ll be writing to you again from sunny California! Take care!
