Angkor Wat So, what color is Siem Reap? The most beautiful shade of blue - the color of money, of greenbacks, of 100-rupee notes, or of blue chip company stock? A lot of money must have been spent in building the temple, but the builders were the blue-blooded Kuber ( Khmer) kings. Were they not? Kuber is the God of Wealth in the Hindu mythology. We used to think that Angkor Wat is the world’s largest Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, but we did not know that Angkor Wat is the world’s largest religious monument also. Its scale is mind-boggling. The whole complex covers an area of 40 square MILES. Angkor Wat is a model of the Hindu mythological universe. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharat are carved on the outer walls in bas-relief. One ... read more

Like most everything else on this trip, words cannot properly convey what we saw over the past two days. Angkor Wat is the biggest religious structure in the world and one of the world's man-made wonders. It is full of beautiful, centuries old temples with intricate and ornate carvings. Angkor Wat is a photographer's paradise and unfortunately my lousy digital camera was useless here. We saw tons of pro photogs out in the templers with tripods and several thousand dollar cameras, just waiting for the perfect photo. On the first day, we hiked up to the top of the temple called Phnom Bakeng and watched the sunset from above. The top of the temple was full of tourists, naturally, which was a bit frustrating. It is nearly impossible to take any pictures without getting other people ... read more

There are no words. We're a few days late in publishing this blog entry because, frankly, we didn't know what to write. Before I get into it, I'll just warn any readers about the rather disturbing pictures you're about to see and horrifying things you're about to read. If you're not ready for it, don't read any further. From 1975-1975, the Khmer Rouge regime, led by dictator extraordinaire Pol Pot, undertook one of the world's worst mass genocides. It's estimated that 2-3 million people (nearly a quarter of Cambodia's population) were exterminated for reasons that are beyond our comprehension. In a nutshell, all educated and intellectuals (doctors, lawyers, teachers, business people, etc) and their families, including babies, as well as dissidents and anyone else the Khmer Rouge felt like killing were rounded up and systematically murdered ... read more

‘Shyamrang’ Siem Reap What is this color ‘Shyam/Siam/Cyan’? Is it the dark blue-black color of a nimbus cloud (Meghashyam) ? Is it light blue green of the ‘sasya-shyamal’ earth, the color of ripe harvest ready for the sickle? Is it azure like the blue sky above or is it deep sapphire blue like the color of the Tonle Sap lake (in Cambodia) stretching to the far horizon? What is the color of Siam Reap? (Tonle Sap is a very curious river. It flows from Tonle Sap lake to the sea part of the year and from sea to the Tonle Sap lake the other part of the year, thus reversing its direction. Have you ever heard of any other river that does that?) From the oval window of the airplane, Siam Reap looked as though God ... read more

Last entry only took us up to our first night in Houay Xai, the border town in Laos. We booked up to catch a bus north to Luang NamTha which we knew could take a whil longer than anticipated due to rain. The weather was not too terrible though so we went for it which meant a 20 hour nightmare journey driving through what looked like stroganoff but was in fact the clay soil in the region. The road on this route is under construction so it's pure clay with scattered bits of aggregate and random bits of machinery. We didn't have a bus as we were told we'd have, we had a big tuk-tuk. They fit 20 people, falang and Lao, and heaps of luggage onto this 4WD with a tuk-tuk carriage on the ... read more

Arriving into Cambodia was a welcome change from the chaos of Vietnam. Cambodia is mostly a rural country of 14 million people and it reminded us more of Thailand and Laos. Hence the title "Same same, but different" which is an extremely popular phrase in SEA. We arrived into Cambodia on a slow boat from the Mekong Delta. We piled onto a bus for the last part of the journey to the capital, Phnom Penh and after a small electrical fire, we were on our way. Phnom Penh Although Cambodia is a rural country, the capital is quite a large city, with 1 million inhabitants. Right away we were impressed by the attempt at order in the city and were impressed that the motorbikes actually followed the street signs some of the time. You couldn't help ... read more

So I finally have some time to sit down and share a few things about the past week or so. I think I left off in Nha Trang where we spent a few days out in the sun (or clouds) and after that we headed to Ho Chi Min City, the capital of Vietnam... on yet another bus. I am going to be honest and tell you that I didn't get to explore or experience the city and appreciate the mass amounts of people and surrounding sights/activities because I was crazy sick!... sick from what I thought was drinking too much BAD Saigon beer but that was not the case, I have never felt so shitty in my life! Couped up in the hotel for 2 rainy days was not fun but part of the ride ... read more

Hello from Cambodia! The main attraction in Cambodia are the temples of Angkor and they are as amazing and inspiring as all the hype around them is. it is in the same league as the Inca ruins of Machu-Pichu and the Mayan ruins on Tikal (both of which Yaron visited so he can say) and all these places make you feel very privileged to be in these places. they are magical and mysterious and also make you feel a little like Indiana Jones The temples in Angkor are in the middle of the jungle and they are huge pyramids and structures. there are so many of them and they are spread around a wide area of the jungle. it took us 3 days just to cover the major ones. they were built between 850 and 1150 ... read more

We arrived in Siem Reap with about 5000 misquitoes to bring along with us from PP. The bus was loaded with bugs and at 7am no one was happy to get on the 'malaria bus' however... when in Cambodia! Siem Reap is a little more of what I expected it to be... a little less developed but in the works with hotels popping up everywhere, dirt roads with dust blowing, tiny shack side road shops and houses with people riding bikes and motobikes. Getting off the bus was a feat that I conquered quite well considering how I feel about getting harassed every 5 seconds. We arrived and the bus was literally swarmed by people with signs for their hotels, tuk-tuk drivers screaming at you to go with them, whispering in your ear free this and ... read more
