We left Mien Mien yesterday. The night before we left a new guy had come to stay there. Dave, he was from Ireland but had been living in Darwin, Australia where he was a fireman for bush fires. We asked if he would like to join us in a game of Yatzee, which he won and it was the first time he had played! Hustler! Anyway, that evening was very quiet, chatting to Dave, dinner then bed. It is amazing how tired you get in the early evening when you spend the day doing nothing, nothing but watch the tide come in and out.
The next morning I was up very early as I was keen to try my hand at catching some fish with the huge net. Linda had no choice but to wake up as I needed a helping hand. So there we were, two lovers, a net and sea full of fish. Linda's job was to hold the one end and shout out where the fish were and my job was to swim out with the other end and circle the fish. Easier said than done. After Linda shouting out orders and me swimming with the heavy net,
I just gave up. These fish were to smart for us. Just as I packed it up and started to swim to shore, a local fishing boat with about 6 guys saw the fish we were trying to get and head straight for our area. Within seconds, they had made a huge circle with there net and proceeded to pull it in. Very eager to see what they had caught I waited in vain. Ha, nothing, even with their boat and huge net they had caught not even one! Told you, these fish are way to smart.
Now exhausted, Linda resumed her usuall positin on the beach sucking up the sun and I, under the thatched roof in my chair reading and enjoying the last few hours before we make our way.
The day before I had gone into town to get some info on the islands and boat times. So I get a ride on a scooter with this local guy. When he drops me back at Mien Mien, I ask him if he can come back the next day with a friend who has a bike to take Linda and I to Serendipity Beach. He agrees and arange
for him and his mate to pick us up at 11am. So the next day he rocks up, alone! I ask him where his mate is? Now he doesn't speek english, but says it's ok, we can fit on his scooter. Linda is not impressed buy this arangement. So anyway, we get on, Linda, the driver, 2 huge backpacks, my small backpack and I. The tires were almost riding on the rims and the road ahead was very bad, full of pot holes. At one point, there was a dirt road hill, no way this scooter will make it? Correct, before we go up Linda is telling this moron that we can walk up. He says no, it's ok the bike will make it. Wrong, we made it about one tenth of the way and when the bike just couldn't go anymore, he hits breaks and the bike starts sliding back. Lucky we managed to stop it before we all fell over. We walked up the hill and after a very bumpy ride, made it to Serendipity Beach. That was yesterday...
Serendipity Beach...... What a hell hole! We have never seen so much white trash in one area at one
time. It was about 1pm and there were guys wasted not even able to walk and the rest just high as a kite. Beggars all over and kids anoying you to buy something. We managed to find a hotel about 200m from the beach and was very quiet. We had a early night with TV and a bad dinner, worst food we have eaten so far.
Today we left for Bamboo Island, the boat left at 10am from Serendipity Beach. The walk to get in the boat was pretty rubbish, you had to walk to the boat from shore and the sea was up to your waist by the time you got to the boat, sux if you are a very short person! And as with every departure from some place, there are always a hand full of idiots who can't tell the time, always late and still, when they see everyone is good to go, take a slow stroll to the boat!
The boat ride was a very long 1 hour as the seats were 2 wooden planks. The capitan, if you can call him that, is a old english chap. The way he was acting, one would think
he was the Capitain of the QE2. He got us to Bamboo Island in one piece so I guess that counts for something.
We got to Bamboo Island and had a choice of two bungallows, both pretty much the same but the one we staying at just looks a little more comfortable. There is no electricity here, only at night from 6pm to 10pm. As usuall, Linda head straight for the beach to tan and I, snorkeling. The water is not as clean as Thailand but fun none the less. There is a bit of coral and I found a huge anenemone with some clown fish in it. Then a storm was brewing on the main land and heading our way. So we sat in the resturant playing cards and lunch. The storm passed and we then went for a walk to the other side of the island. I think we will be there tomorrow for the whole day. And that is it for now, a few more days of doing sweet nothing but watch the tide come in and out.....
