The team!
The girls and I outside one of the beautiful temples - the tree roots that ha wrapped around them were breath taking! So, you're probably wondering what on Earth crunk means, right? Well, today Amy told us that the previous WYI team had been creative with their words. So from now on, getting "cambodian drunk" will be now known as CRUNK! I plan not to get crunk, as there are way more important things.... though it is awfully hard not too, when you are surrounded by $2 cocktails everywhere you look! Let's face it, Australian bars are stingy when it comes to alcohol, meticulously mearusing out every mL of vodka. Cambodian bars, on the other hand, do not use measuring cups, but rather estimate. In their eyes, "more is better", which is fine with me! These last few days have been hectic, getting to really know Siem Reap and its surroundings! All of our team has arrived, and is made up of five lovely ladies! Amy(26) is our team leader, then the other three ladies are Sophie (18), Jess (19) and Colleen (26) - they are all absolutely gorgeous and bring unique skills and talents to the table. Still, the very thought of the five us (who all have never had any experience with bricklaying or cementing) building a fence makes me cringe!
Dr Fish!
Jess and I getting our feet nibbled by fish - an odd feeling! Last night, after a delicious Mexican dinner, Jess and I decided to go out, while the others had an early night. We walked through the amazing night markets, once again marveling at the cheap prices. After buying a few gifts, we both decided a green tea would complement our night perfectly. After a few short minutes walk, we reached the "Blue Pumpkin", which gave us the best green tea ever! Next door was a massage clinic, and deciding to 'splurge', we each paid $3 for a 30 minute back, neck and sholders massage (which was divine). Continuing our 'splashing out' night, we then headed over to "Dr Fish", which is basically a giant fish tank where you dip your feet in and fish nibble at your feet. I have never felt such a tickling sensation in my life, and for only $2 for 20 minutes, that was one experience I will never forget! With our feet tingling and baby smooth, we caught a tuk-tuk home, did some light reading and then went to bed.
After another great night of sleep (thanks to my insect repellant, Bushmans!), we rose for an early breakfast of french toast and orange juice, which
Angkor Waht
The spectacular temple of Angkor Waht - the reflection of the temple! we had together as a team. The next few hours were spent in the meeting room, where Amy basically briefed us on our contract, what we were hoping to get out of the program, and a few icebreakers so we could all get to know one another a bit better. After these activities, we settled down by the pool for a one hour break, had lunch and then set off for the temples! Dressed in hats, sunnies and sunscreen, we were immune to the sun's harsh rays (woo!). We visited three temples, the most famous been Angkor Waht ( where Tomb Raider was filmed). The old sandstone was absolutely breath-taking, and the stories behind the carvings were fascinating (a big thanks to our tour guide Yaan!). I, being an animal lover, almost had a heart attack when monkeys started to come up to us. I took about a thousand photos, I was awe-struck! This country is so amazing, the culture is fascinating and the people are so lovely! When we got home from the temples, we went out for a traditional Khmer meal. I had chicken Lok Lah, which is made up with a lots of different spices served with
Awaiting sunset
Here I am, just casually basking in the sun, reading, waiting to see the beautiful sunset over the temple! rice and egg (DELICIOUS). After a banana fruit shake, we headed off yet again to the Blue Pumpkin. I had a green tea and the most delicious vanilla macaroon ( sorry Adriano Zumbo). Finally, we had a quick wonder around another set of night markets, then set back home to Earthwalkers. So currently, I am sitting by the pool typing this on Amy's laptop in the warm night air, not a care in the world! Though I am sure this will not last, as the real work starts on Wednesday! Missing you all xxx
