Today we were picked up by Rany at 9:30 and first went to Angkor Wat, the main temple. We went to a few others, but really I thought the most interesting one was Ta Prohm because it had humongous trees growing on top of it and all around it. There's a video below of some ants that were there, crawling along a really long wire.
Our plan for the evening was to go to the COFCO orphanage to see their dance show – we had gotten a flier from one of the kids and thought it would be fun to go to. We wanted to donate things instead of money, so we wanted to buy school supplies. Rany suggested 50 kilos of rice, but we declined for two reasons: rice is boring, and they can probably get a much better price for rice than we can. We instead bought school supplies like notebooks, pencils, paint, etc.
At 18:00 Rany picked us up at the World Lounge restaurant on Pub Street. Actually, Ronald and he picked me up at the restaurant because we had ordered sandwiches to go and they still weren’t ready by the time it was time to
the back
they punch the number through on your first day go, so Ronald went to the hotel to bring Rany to me and the sandwiches. He took us there and we were the first to arrive and they showed us to the front center table. They brought us a free coke, a bottle of water, and some food.
The show began with the director and here’s the show:
First was the Chayan dance that they do for fun. On stage they were all boys, 4 playing instruments on the stage and one acting as a monkey.
Second was the Blessing dance that they do for welcoming guests or for royalty. This was danced by 3 girls, all with flowers, and the blessing is for a long and healthy life.
Third came the Tep Macha dance. When the director was explaining it I sort of lost the thread of the story but it has something to do with Ramajana and his beautiful wife, Sidam. A giant kidnapped her so I think what happened was he got the monkey army leader, Hanuman, to build a building with him. I’m not sure what happened in between, but the dance is between Hanuman and Sama something, the monkey leader and a beautiful woman.
Fourth was the Apsara dance that is set in the heavens. This one was in the garden, so each of the three girls had flowers at one part.
Fifth was a modern hip-hop dance which was basically the three boys and one girl just dancing around and trying to do some sweet moves.
Sixth we had the Coconut dance which shows the relationship between men and women. They each had two coconut shells they were banging together – probably my favorite dance.
Last we had the Fishing dance which shows that people can earn a living by fishing. The same kids that were in the coconut dance were in this one.
The dances were nice and it was really interesting to see the girls dance because they always dance in a really controlled, slow manner, so it was pretty to see. Ronald took a video of the coconut dance, so when he uploads that I’ll add a link to it.
After we gave our donations and Rany took us back to the hotel. We went to see the Old Market (here they had really ugly bracelets, but many other nice things -- all the same pattern as the
one next door – and I bought some pants. This part was pretty funny because she told me, “I like your skin” when I was trying them on. Boy would they love my sister…she’s transparent ) afterwards but it was sort of shutting down, so we went back to the hotel…we have an early day in the morning…pick up at 5 am!
