It hasn't stopped raining since last evening and most of that time I've spend in the cool hotel room. Yesterday was spent at the family house in conference about the inevitable delay in finishing the house since Sophat misused significant amounts of the money. He is in disgrace and it has been suggested that he leave the family and "go away from here". It has been agreed that too many people are to be sheltered by this home and that it should be completed by one further bank transfer of funds, but that the top floor only will be built and the underneath of the house will be used for storage and for serving noodles to the locals. A trip to the bank was my last chore of the day to ask for "Remittance Instructions" to ... read more

My journey to Stung Treng was pretty darn “exciting”. The bus was scheduled to leave at 6:15AM and I set my alarm for 5:30AM…which turned out to be unnecessary as the cicadas (maybe??) started to chirp around 4:45AM…definitely was not falling back to sleep. I had told the guy who served me my food the night before that I wanted eggs in the morning…well, they ran out of eggs apparently so I was stuck with some bread that I purchased on the street and while it was indeed tasty it was not enough for me. So maybe I mentioned previously that the road to Ban Lung was terrible…well guess what, it was just as bad on the way back…this time I took a real bus although this bus was not standard size by any means…and even ... read more

LAOS / CAMBODIA BORDER CROSSING - (April 2007) Tues 3rd April Unfortunately, the crossing of the Laos/ Cambodian border again turned out not to be a straight forward exercise as I had hoped it would be. After catching a small motor boat from Don Det with a few other people first thing in the morning, we travelled for 5 to 10 minutes across the Mekong River to a small town on the main land where we were taken to a small travel agency. After a bit of confusion over what was happening, we were then bundled into two mini buses with around 8 people in each. We then set off towards the border on what was probably the worst road towards a border crossing that I have every travelled down with the road being completely unsealed ... read more

The final night in Si Phan Don was the best of the lot, a rainstorm clearing the air of the humidity and allowing some sleep. The trip to the Cambodian border was uneventful though having to pay for an exit stamp for Laos, then for a Cambodian visa-on-arrival, then for a Cambodian entry stamp, smacked of a rip-off. Despite the travel company knowing hours earlier just how many passengers needed to get from the border onwards, it turned out that the bus they had laid on was too small. After a wait, a saloon car turned up and the travel company agent asked for 4 volunteers. Reasoning that this could hardly fail to be more comfortable than the bus, LA Woman and I stuck our hands up. In hindsight this was a mistake. Firstly, there were ... read more
