Political situation just suddenly in tight today. My colleagues have arrived but we were not suggested to go outside since violence and protest may go on... I am just like a prisoner stuck in the hotel room now...seeing the city from my cage...hearing all the police alarm and annoying beeping.... My mission of searching Robert Jai failed. ... read more

Never thought that I would be here but now I really am! Before I come all my friends asked me where "Bangladesh" is...actually it's east of India and only 4 hours flight from Hong Kong. This time I don't have a curry lunchbox photo to start with as I was taking the Thai Airline and the lunchbox on plane was in Thai style!! ... read more

Hi all! So it's been a while between blogs but I have good excuses all round! For about the last 2 weeks of my stay in Banlgadesh I got sick with a fever of about 38 to 41 degrees that lasted almost 2 weeks. Needless to say I felt CRAP, but am finally better, Hooray! Biggest thanks to Cam and Nic who looked after me and came with me for my blood test (didn't even hurt!). No Typhoid (Yay!) and just need to re-check the Dengue test back in Oz. Those things aside, I've said goodbye to my Banlga family and workplace and headed over the border to India. Kent and El, Nic's brother and his wife and also friends of mine from Australia joined us for the adventure which was great! You will be pleased ... read more

I was just waiting for an email to come before I headed off to bed and I decided to read through my blog postings. Wow, I can really be negative! I don’t think of myself as a naturally negative person, so I thought I should try and find the words to explain a little better what it is like to live in Bangladesh. The other day I had an interview with a foreigner on contract with the government, and she graciously suggested we meet at the Bagha Club, the club for British citizens. Given the changed rules at the Canadian Club, this was the first time I was able to go to a club and it was great to sit and have a beer by the pool as we chatted. After our formal interview we started ... read more

The most random things happen in Bangladesh that would never happen to me anywhere else. For example, the other day I was visiting a small indigenous NGO and they got all excited that I was there and asked me if I would be willing to be the narrator for the English version of a movie they are making about one group of indigenous people in Bangladesh. Ok, sure. Then, the back of my neck broke out in this nasty rash that was so itchy it was driving me crazy. I asked a friend at BRAC to come with me to the pharmacy to get some topical cream to take away the itch, but she suggested I see a doctor. When I told her how complicated that is with my insurance company she brought me downstairs to ... read more

Hello all, Well, I wish I had wonderful stories about life here in Bangladesh over the past week, but alas. I had to cancel all of my Eid plans and spend the better part of the past week in bed with a nasty virus which included a fever of 103 and any other symptom you can associate with either flu or cold. Am starting to feel human again (sort of) but with a nasty residual head cold. Have been forced to move on from Grey's Anatomy (how many times can you watch the same thing?) to the season of Friends when Rachel was pregnant (aahhh... good times) and have been known to subject myself to Wife Swap and America's Next Top Model on tv (seriously? Is this the best of American culture to export?). So I ... read more

Sorry it has been so long for an update. The internet seems to almost never work at home and I’ve been so engrossed in my research that I haven’t done much exciting to write home about. Plus, as my mother always told me, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I’m trying to stay positive, but being in Bangladesh alone is a very different experience than being here with a group of people. I am very isolated, and when I do venture out I’m on the unfortunate end of sexual harassment. There’s something very un-nerving about being here by myself, and I’m constantly on edge, even during the daytime. It’s a bit draining. My current mood was set two weeks ago on Thanksgiving Sunday when I woke up, took a ... read more

I am so happy right now, I could cry. I walked into Arif’s room for the five millionth time this week to see if the internet was working, and there were these four lovely little neon lights blinking away. I ran to computer right away, and the whole time it was booting up I just kept repeating “please stay connected, oh please stay connected, please God, all I need is 5, maybe10 minutes, please, please, please stay connected.” So far so good, but I’ll type fast just in case…. So here are some answers to some questions I know you’ve all been asking: How many days until you start blowing black crap out of your nose? 3 How many days until a general feeling of ick settles into your stomach? 10 How many days until you ... read more

So we've had a bit of rain lately. Monsoon season has finally arrived and it pelted down. The weather was even slightly cool and pleasant for a while, but the roads flooded in minutes and the streets (most of which are not sealed) remain mud for weeks. Had a few stacks on rickshaws when the wheel went into a drain (roads knee deep in water so very hard to tell), but a lovely brick wall caught my fall so I remained dry, had snap locked my phone, just in case! It is my last week of prac! It's gone so fast (a little faster as I'm leaving a tad early to trek the Himalayas hehehe)! I have finished interviewing 50 women factory workers about their knowledge on HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health and am finalising ... read more

Well, I’ve survived my first week back in the Desh (barely). I would really like to say that things are going well, but I’m lonely and tired of being sticky. Last week I was so bored I actually went into BRAC just for some company and to enjoy the air conditioning! Things promise to be better next week though - I have meetings and interviews scheduled everyday. Last week I had my first research interview with my old boss. Then I came home all excited and ready to transcribe and proceeded to delete half of the interview by accident. Fingers crossed it goes better this week! Am settling into routine as much as possible. Right now it is the holy month of Ramadan, my favourite time in Bangladesh. All of the offices close early (between 3:30-4:00) ... read more
