Anne Smith's family story mainly has to do with her aunt. At the time of the genocide her aunt was only 8 years old. She encountered many horrific events and was often face to face with death. During the genocide, Anne's family members were killed during the death march. One of her family member had both her eyes gouged out because she was struggling to keep up with the rest of the people: her family members were terrified at the fact that they could do nothing to help her. Anne's aunt was eventually sold to an Arab family. That family saved her life. Anne's father, who at the time was drafted into the Turkish Navy, was allowed to look for any remaining relatives and after a while, he manged to find Anne's aunt. Eventually, Anne's aunt and father made it to America, where they were meet by two for Anne's uncles that escaped the genocide by leaving to American before it even occurred.
