I never really had the priveledge of travelling whilst growing up as a kid in South Africa. My Travels started with friends about 5 years ago taking me all the way to the Drakensberg. I decided on my first solo backpacking trip in January 2009 and by April 17th 2009 I was well on my way to explore my own country. before setting foot abroad, it was important for me to get to know my own country first. Living down in beuatiful Cape Town I wanted to travel further up north.
My trip took me first on the Panorama Route which includes the Blyde River Canyon stop, Gods Window and the 3 Rondawels. From there on its all the way to the Kruger National Prk, which in itself is a huge attraction for foreign vistors. I had a 2 days stop over in the Park and consisted of full day game drive during the day and night. The day drive was fairly good although the weather kept most animals away and I did not see any Lion or Eliphants. The night produced a white rhino and some bush babies.
My next stop was Nelspruit from where I awaited the
Bazbus (a popular travel bus used by travellers) to get from BP to BP, to go to Swaziland. I find Swaziland to consist of lots of green rolling hills, the people very down to earth and some beautiful sights. The Milwane Wild Life Santuary is a great place for nature lovers. There I have met some great pals from around the world and we did some wonderful things together. We did this walk oneday towards the lake with the crocodiles, we walked all day, with very little water or eats (anticipated a 3 hour walk). We ended up eating wild guavas along the way and survived atripaon 1 bottle of water and some juice and dried Mango. Oh! Boy did we had a picnic. But nothing really mattered when we eventually arrived at the lake and was just blown away by its tranquility.
From there I spend a few days in St Lucis/Mtubathuba on the Eliphant Coast (Durban). I had some awesome sights on Lake St Lucia, a fish eagle pair, lots of hippos and some crocs. Visited the cheetah project at Endolweni and saw the Karakul, african wild cat, etc.
I then met up with a travel
budy Jim who I have met in Swaziland and we traveled from Durban down to Cape Town where I joined him for a tour of the Cape Peninsula, Waterfront. Jim is a fabulous guy who shared lots his travel stories with me. He is well travelled.
This trip gave me opportunity to experience some wonderful lessons in life. See the beauty of my loving country and at the same time met backpackers from various places across the globe. I have made some strong connections to some and are regularly exchanging emails, chats via skype or telephone. Travelling can bring people together in strange ways. I am glad for my awesome experience and sharing it like this.
My next trip I anticipate to do the Okovango Delta, Chobe and Vic Falls.
Travel Safe where ever you may go!
