MOROCCO!!! Up early at 7am to head to the port of Algeciras. Found a day tour which is highly recommended. Though Morocco is a wealthy African country, compared to the West it is still poor so it has the usual amount of hustlers especially at the port, border and train stations. The fast ferry is nice and crossed in 70 minutes...a bit more than the expected 35 due to fog. Met our guide...Abdoul, he is likeable and speaks about the sites and facts in Spanish then in English. Boarded a comfy 18 seat bus in Ceuta a spanish city on the African continent. We went thru the border, which was an adventure in itself. A lot like the Tijuana, US border. Then it was 20km to Serpta. About half way we stop roadside for the touristy camel ride which was actually very fun. I wasn't going to ride it but the most fun part I realized was the camel getting up and down while you're on it...so I wanted to do it!! It is a very powerful beast and just being on it as it got up and down was an experience. Actually they were not camels, which have two humps,
1 hump ... 1 hump ... 1 hump ...

dromedaries spit
these were single hump dromedaries.
So... would you like your camel with one hump or two?
After that, we walked thru the medina which is the old city. It was truly a step back in time. Past market stalls and vendors. All local color in the dress and faces of the people. Tried to take a few discrete pictures of the people since some were a bit touchy about that. Winding, narrow streets, 3000 alleys and doors to the mosque in the center. We then left to get the hard sell at a sales starved carpet shop. The goods are nice and I negotiated for 2 items to be shipped. Then we sat for a barely palatable lunch of vegetable soup, shish-k-bob (which today was a non-discript chunk of meat which may have been camel) and couscous with chicken and vegetables.
Now a 60km, 80min ride to Tanger where it is now 1630. Due to the fact it has become a rainy day, we basically stop for 30 min, have coffee and get back on bus to head back the same way we came. Bus, ferry and now it's 11pm... we're a bit tired but there are worse ways to spend a day and NOW we can say that we've been to MOROCCO!!!
