April 2, 2007 Masiye Camp- Narrative Therapy Workshop. This was a training day. Salvation Army Masiye (Ma-see-a) Camp was putting on a workshop this week taught by a couple of ladies from Netherlands and Australia. This workshop aimed at teaching the skill of moving aside the negative character defining story of a child’s life to find out and make room for the second, positive story for the child to redefine their path in life. This was a four day course but Dakotah and I could only stay for the first day. The content of the course was fantastic. Even in the first day it provided some practical options for reaching into a child’s life to pull out some good things and some good people that they can refer to. This was also a good opportunity to ... read more

Chipangali March 31 Finally we got to Chipangali. We thought we weren’t gonna go because molly (jenni’s car) wouldn’t start. But, luckily jenni’s brother was able to jumpstart molly for us. There were a lot of loins there. One of them tried to pounce on me thought the cage (it seemed a little crazy), it scared the lights out of me! But the other ones were ok. Most of them were lying around, but there were two young males that were playing and having fun. But a certain leopard wasn’t quite as happy. She was hissing and trying to attack us through the cage. But the male leopard next door seemed friendly. He kept pawing at the cage trying to get to her. The rest of the day was fun, but mom scared a poor owl ... read more

KG VI School for disabled children, home visit, and Mahlabzulu March 29, 07 Pastor Temba had some running around to do this morning so we got to the school a bit late. Dakotah and I split up this morning. She went over to the senior art class to teach them to add beads to their hemp art and I adventured back to the kindergarten (grade zero) class for their reading time. The teachers took the opportunity to go and view the articles for the fete tomorrow so left me in charge of the class. There was a student studying Montessori teaching who joined the class to observe as well. Crazy Kindergaten, I guess it must be the same all over the world. After the story I got all the children except one into their desks and ... read more

Jenni’s house march25 Wow church was fun today! Today we went to a different church, it was really fun. There were so many people there. That’s what their biggest weakness is. The only thing they lack is space. But they don’t want to move because they are in the middle of town and are very accessible by bus routes. I wouldn’t wanna come there late; I wouldn’t have anywhere to sit! When we left the church I experienced the biggest downfall in all different countries. We were sitting in the back of the truck (I love sitting in the back of the truck) with a whole lot of people. They were all talking, and laughing…but I didn’t understand them! Don’t you hate that? When people are joking around but you don’t get the joke? Too bad ... read more

Monday, March, 26 Today was a rest day. We had a nice visit with Dorothy this morning. She walked over with her baby CJ to pass on a children’s book for us to read. We had discussions about Sunday School teaching. Dorothy has been teaching Sunday school for a long time and her daughter helps out too now. I showed her the program that I had brought with. She loved the little attention getting activities that are in that program and took note of the Prayer from the Heart and Read your Bible with Purpose activities. Dorothy says that Sunday School curriculum is hard to get here in Zimbabwe. I will need to get Dorothy’s E-mail address so that I can send her activities that would be not too difficult to find supplies for. We take ... read more

Jenni’s house March 22 We got to teach kids! Well actually we read to them but it still makes a difference. It was kinda like a one to one reading thing but instead of taking one kid out the class during class we actually read to all the children then read with them one by one. We have been teaching (well, reading) for a little class of twelve. The class is a special Ed class, that’s why we need to help them read. I never thought of myself as a teacher. Not that I really am one. Jenni’s house March 23 Been there done that! As soon as I got here I made a goal, to catch a lizard. It seems kinda foolish but it’s a challenge. The older lizards are slower but they’re smart, and ... read more

Something I forgot to mention, the lakes are stocked with Bass, Smallmouth Bass. I even saw some that the park ranger had just caught. He showed us his fishing rod: a stick with a piece of line and a hook and worm. Apparently, the Bass here are a little less smart than those at home. These ones come right up to the shore to take the bait. And Dakotah was a little surprised to see the park ranger with a semi-automatic riffle over his shoulder. And when we got home Jenny told me of news of that little boy with AIDS, Wilfred, that I met on that second day here. Last week the boy’s uncle and his wife took an interest in taking care of Wilfred. The grandmother came into the city as well. The Aunt ... read more

We saw White Rhinos Mar 24 We headed out this morning to Motopos National Park just outside of Bulawayo. This park is known for its balancing rocks and Bushman paintings. There is also a game reserve in part of the park where the White Rhinoceros resides. According to our guide, Lovemore, this is the only park in the world that you may walk with the Rhinos. They are an endangered species and were almost wiped out as the Rhino horn was believed to be an aphrodisiac. So, our guide, Lovemore, picks us up from the house at about 10am and we head out. We arrive at the gate and he gets out to do the registering. Lovemore gets back into the truck and it won’t start. I had read about these misshaps on tours and they ... read more
