Watching the sunrise on the Zambian hills was quite the way to wake up. Everyone of us made sure we got up early enough to check out the spectacle. I watched it from my bed on top of the truck and took loads of photos while the kettle was on the boil. Awesome.
The seven of us filled our stomachs with coffee, tea, eggs and toast and hit the road. We were heading to Lusaka to make camp for the night before moving on to Livingston. About 40 miles after leaving the hilltop campsite we crossed the Luangua River, the same river we had camped next to two nights before. The (suspension?) bridge was impressive and the views even more so. We were able to walk across the length of the bridge and take loads of photos before jumping back in the truck.
Here's a video of us on the bridge. A few hours later we arrived in the capitol of Zambia. Our first stop was the Manda Hill Mall, basically a western style mall with all the comforts of home. We all jumped on the internet for an hour or two before getting groceries and heading for our campsite. On the way
to the campsite we dropped Justin and Wendy off at an optometrist because he had a speck in his eye that had been bothering him for a couple days.
The rest of us went to Eureka Camp and got situated. Not long after setting our tents up, Cam and I met a trio of Americans heading from London to Capetown. They were doing social development work in conjunction with football (soccer) and helping out kids along the way. I really admire and envy them, you can check out their website
here. After intros were made we started a small football math, 3 a side. Justin, Cam and I got beat by Lorrie, Brian and Nicio. Actually we didn’t get beat, we got destroyed. It didn’t help us that we were up against an experienced footballer (Brian) and also the vastly experienced Lorrie Fair, who has played for the US National Women’s Team many many times. Oh and then add a Brazilian to that duo and you can do the math.
After getting sweaty and dirty I showered up before helping Wendy cook dinner. We had a tasty dinner of mash potatoes, pork chops and some massacred sausages (Wendy’s
fault). ☺ So after dinner we headed to the bar to watch the Netherlands play Mexico in an international friendly before the World Cup starts. To say that World Cup fever has taken me and Africa by storm would be the understatement of the year. Everywhere we go and everywhere we camp we meet people heading to the most southern country on the African continent. Loads of people are heading from Europe to South Africa by road, I’ve been amazed and very envious.
So Mexico ended up losing by two goals to one and shortly after the match ended I met a couple twin brothers that were born in Zambia. Cam and I had a good chat with them before we went to bed. It was great to meet and hang out with them because they’ve got a house rented down in Johannesburg during the exact times I will be there for the USA v Algeria match.
My bed beckoned and I abided. After a quick TV show on the laptop I zonked out and awaited the day to come, and Victoria Falls on the horizon of the week.
Hope you like the photos and post! Until
next time, Pura Vida!
