Amazing things you see
theres always something amazing that you see as your driving down the streets here.... People crippled, walking, moving animals, all in the down pour of the tanzanian rains... The Short rains of Tanzania have slowly started to begin! We have been having a little rain each day this week, up until today! For two days in a row it just poured down... It made for a hard time trying to get the laundry to dry on the line, and did quite a number on the roads! As you can seein the pictures! We drove over to Elly & Neema Martin's house on Saturday to pick up their family to come over for dinner, and it was a messy trip! I took these pictures on the way over there and back! Mud holes 2-3 feet deep, and some holes not worth finding out just how deep they really were! Yet, the African people are still walking around everywhere about their daily activities, as if nothing were wrong... business as usual they would say. This week most of the business in town are closing for Rahmadad (not spelling that right I am quite sure) but the Islamic holiday is shutting down central Arusha buisnesses for a few days... So we'll have to just hold out on making a trip to Pick n Pay for groceries.
Anyway, we had
the Martin family come over for dinner... Neema was going to teach me how to make her delicious samosas and Leak soup, while Emily was going to teach Mary & Miriam, their two older twin girls, how to Crochet plastic bag purses... (the same one that she made there at Northport) Camille Winkler brought me over to her house one morning and we worked on into the early afternoon and she was the one who taught me how to make the rugs and purses out of plastic grocery bags and then I went home and taught it to Emily... who has fallen in love with it! Since then, she has made several as gifts for friends here at the church in Arusha, and is now teaching the girls here to make them as well. (thank you Camille) I love when we pass our talents around and teach each other new things!
We enjoyed the talking in the kitchen the laughing about old memories and getting to know one another well again! Mindy and Gracie are about 6 months apart and when we lived here before they were learning to crawl and stand together, I remember learning the word "Si-mama"
Teaching someone Something New!
The Girls and their Plastic purses: Emily, Gracie, Mary, Miriam, & Mindy in our living room as Mindy was telling gracie to (stand up). This time, at age 4 and 5 they were running through the yard, screaming, giggling and chasing each other, speaking a little English mixed with a little Swahili and acting like they ha know each other all their lives! Its always so funny how the launguage of children is universal!
Cheza = playing With the season being different the kids arent quite used to the warm afternoons in mid October, but we did find one familiar tradition to uphold.. Brent went to the market and found the kids two small green pumpkins and brought them home for us to carve... Now those of you who have heard Brents pumkin sermon will remember how much fun we have and how much we enjoy making them as complicated as possible... the kids had a ball.. kelly carved the lion and Brent started the Elephant before he had to run to town with a "fundi" to try to get the water line fixed.. so I got to finish it for him.. and the kids giggled and laughed the whole time!
Another Adventurous day ahead of us here in
Arusha! I believe there have been over 30 baptisms this month alone.. I will have to get my notebook out to check on a total number. I keep writing them down each time someone comes forward at church, every Bible study, and then with each announcment of others being baptized throghout the week.. its actually hard to keep up with, there have probably even been more that I just havent heard about yet. (what a great problem to have though! )
We love you and miss you but we're loving being here in Tanzania!
All our Love! Brent, Julie & family
