June 30th
Okay so I skipped a few days in the blog but dear reader, you didn’t miss out on much. I got back from Pretoria and did my best impression of a couch potato at Kieron’s house. Football was the main agenda and watching the World Cup was my pass time. (Weather wasn’t so great, and that meant staying warm indoors beat spending money on “sight seeing” in the fog).
Luke, Hayley and Mike had returned from Bloemfontein after watching England crash out of the tournament to Germany, so I met up with them on the 29th, and went out to watch some football with them. I ended up sleeping at Luke and Hayley's rental apartment and the next day we went out sight seeing since Mike had a rental car.
We drove south of Cape Town along the peninsula until we came upon Simon’s Town. The whole coastal cruise was sooo scenic, lots of mountains jetting out from the shorelines and since it was a nice clear day out you could see forever. After arriving to Simon’s Town we headed for what the town is known for, African Penguins. There is a whole colony of penguins
that live and breed on the shoreline. I wasn’t expecting much but was really shocked to see how many of them there were, and how close we could get to them! It was a real tourist attraction, especially because of the World Cup, so as you can imagine a lot of people were there.
After checking out the penguins for an hour or so we continued down the coast (it reminded me a lot of the beginning of my trip, along Highway 1 heading north to Big Sur, California) towards Cape Point. Unfortunately we got to the park gates late after one of us tried saving some money and hiding in the trunk, or maybe it was one of the many stops we made along the way to let Luke regurgitate his breakfast because of motion sickness and a hang over. In any case we missed out on Cape Point and so we headed up the other side of the peninsula, stopping at a nice seaside town called Scarborough. There we enjoyed the coastline and the views and even met a beach dog. We continued along the beautiful peninsula soaking up the views and heading back to Cape Town.
Our stomachs were growling by the time we reached the V&A Waterfront so we headed out for a nice dinner together. Luke and Mike had steak on their minds so we went to a steakhouse that was probably out of my budget but I ordered the cheapest item on the menu, a burger. Hahaha!
Anyways after dinner the three English drove me back to Mowbray. I borrowed my snorkel video mask to Luke and Hayley since they would be going shark cage diving in a couple days time, and we said our goodbyes. Luke and Hayley are a great couple of people (so is Mike, great chap!) and I’ll miss all the banter we gave each other.
Hope you like the photos, until next time, Pura Vida!
