I Took a bus from Pretoria to Nelspruit. Nelspruit is the city that is the closest to stay and organize tours to Kruger National Park (if you’re not staying in the park itself). Kruger National Park is one of the biggest game reserves in SA and one of the best in the continent (http://www.sanparks.org.za/parks/kruger/). As I didn’t get much information on specific companies to do tours with, how difficult it would be to visit the park with a rental car, etc., I decided to just travel to Nelspruit and figure out the rest there. As I usually like to do. I took the Gautrain from Centurion, Pretoria to Johannesburg Park Station and from there, the bus. In the station itself, I was approached by at least 3 people asking for money (I guess I must’ve looked ... read more

Hello! It’s morning; I’m typing with fingerless gloves and wearing long underwear under pajamas with wool slipper socks and a fleece jacket. It’s our winter, and gets quite cold once the sun goes down at 5:30 until it comes up at 6:30. It’s the end of term 2 and I look forward to a 3 week holiday (when I will attend district curriculum training and teach extra class sessions for Gr 12) . And most importantly, it will soon be a year since I arrived in South Africa. I attended a short training for those of us who plan to host SA28’s, due to arrive in two weeks. Peace Corps Trainees will shadow an experienced PCV (that’s me!)for one weekend of their 10 week training. They will meet my host family, walk around my ... read more

Dear friends, It’s a Friday night...and as it is for all teachers, classroom work is over; but a stack of tests to “mark” and lessons to be prepared await my attention. Tomorrow I meet 4 or 5 other PCV’s at Kwagga where there is a nice little place called Roman’s Pizza which makes the best spinach/feta pizza anywhere! And I found licorice candy at Shop-Rite the other day...Oops! I got distracted talking about food...really, what I’m glad about is that I get to spend time with other PCV’s besides communicating by WhatsApp on our smart phones. Well, the others do 95% of the texting, becuz I cn’t keep up wth their speed, conversation, etc. (a bit of a generation gap) The last few weeks I have accompanied Sele (my school) learners on two Sat. field trips ... read more

This blog has taken a bit longer than we had expected as we have been without Internet access for a week while we have been in Kruger National Park area so there is a bit to catch up on. Buckle in for a long read or skip to the pictures. Spent Sunday just lazing around the Garden Court Hotel in Johannesburg catching up an bit of sleep which we had lost to jet lag and talking to an Aussie couple who we met at the hotel. Monday morning we were picked up by a safari company to drive us to Kruger National Park and headed north across the high veldt. It took about 6 hours to get to our lodge which was on the edge of the park. As soon as we arrived we headed out ... read more

...Animals Extraordinaire! We just spent 10 glorious days in the bush (well, fairly civilized camps that are fenced in areas with a store, cafeteria, etc, but we only showered once!) in our little green tent. We were even joined by a pumba outside our tent on our last night....a momma, poppa and baby must have liked our patch of grass. We were less keen to see a hyena outside our tent the night before. Thankfully the hyena, unlike our pumba, was on the other side of the fence, but still! I will let the pictures speak for themselves - it was very hard to narrow down our choices. We loved every minute of it, and were totally mesmerized about how little the animals cared about our vehicle. These are WILD animals....it was phenomenal. Our typical day ... read more

Every once in a while I am reminded that I am indeed in a different part of the world. When I am tired and stressing about work, I may not see everything with a good sense of appreciation and humor. At these times I get frustrated.....for example, I couldn’t take pictures of the school (my excuse for no school blogs yet) because I have no batteries. I bought AA’s at KwaMhlanga, but the camera said the batteries were exhausted. One of my learners told me that I had to buy Duracell to work in a camera. The next time I was in the grocery store, I could only find this generic kind (I guess they are only good for clocks and such things). While there, I ran into Laze (Lazarus) Ramolefo, a teacher at Sele who ... read more

A primer on my host family: In the house or outbuildings live: Martha Simelane (73); her youngest daughter, Zanele, and her youngest son, Samuel (who works in Pretoria and has a girlfriend in KwaMhlanga, so he is not here every night), and Zanele’s daughter Thandeke, who is in Gr 1. Others have stayed here for 1-2 month visits. Another of Martha’s daughters, Ouma, and her husband Edison, live down the street with 3 of their 4 daughters. Their youngest daughter, Queen, is one of my Gr 10 learners, and she has been staying at Martha’s house most of the time for the past month. She helps with housework, and helps Martha, because Zanele just got a job at Shop-Rite, the grocery store in KwaMhlanga. I am finishing up a two week holiday ... read more

Geo: -25.4797, 30.9699This morning we had a slow start to the day. We started the day with enjoying a huge breakfast on the deck. Today was planned to be more relaxed than yesterday. On the way to the National Botanical Gardens we stopped at a large Cape Union Mart store. Here we bought few things that we would need for our upcoming camping trip to Mana Pools National Park. We arrived at the gardens at about 1pm. The next three hours were spent slowly walking around and enjoying various themed gardens. I really enjoy visiting parks and gardens, a very peaceful time. Among the plants there was a sculpture exhibition of large, metal bugs. At the Nels River viewpoint we could see where the Nels River meets with the Crocodile River. There were also many Strangler ... read more

Geo: -24.7892, 30.8688Today the four of us we went on a day trip through the scenic area of Mpumalanga. Our first stop was in the town of Sabie. Here we collected a few tourist brochures and a scenic map of the area. We continued driving towards our first scenic stop. At about a quarter past 10 we arrived at Lone Creek Falls. After paying a small entrance fee at the carpark we were allowed to continue to the waterfall. It was a very short 200m walk along a path to the bottom of the waterfall. The waterfall was a simple, small one, just under 70m high. We were quite lucky as we were the only ones here and for the moment had the place to ourselves. The path led us to the bottom of the waterfall, after ... read more

Geo: -25.4797, 30.9699Finally just after midday we left Johannesburg. To celebrate John's birthday (Paul's dad) we were going away for a few nights to Nelspruit. Paul and I were ready to leave at about 9am, but by the time his parents John and Noreen were ready it was about midday! We drove north and in a few hours we arrived. I was looking forward to this trip as it was a chance to see a new part of the country. Nelspruit was a large city. The BnB was very nice- a large, big open partly thatched house. By the time we checked in and went to our rooms it was already after 4pm. I loved our room, it was very unique, it had its own deck and a huge bath. We relaxed at the BnB for ... read more
