Hi everyone My email is finally working. For some reason, I haven't been able to get anything to work under my yahoo account. I'm going to work backwards in my travel blog. I'll start with today and then work backwards. We left Joburg this morning at 8am in our "shuttle" if you want to call it that. It's actually a Toyota Stanza or something to that effect. It seats 7 but is tiny and we were a little cramped to say the least. After we were all in the car, there wasn't even room for our camera bag, let alone any luggage. We had known this in advance and had organized with the company to bring a trailer. It was a six hour drive and boiling hot and of course the air conditioning in the "shuttle" ... read more

I love the saying by J.R.R. Tolkien... "Those who wander are not always lost..." Some are like me in the respect that it seems that we're always looking for something and may appear a little wayward. The truth of the matter is that maybe we are all constantly in search of something, some are more extroverted in their pursuit as I am, others are more introspective. I've searched and found great beauty here in Africa, in the land, the animals and especially the people. EVERYONE is so warm. This trip has been a pure pleasure, when of the highlights of my life. Here are more shots of great people: our Field Ranger Kevin and our Tracker, Godfrey. These guys have showed us some great sights including this beautiful 16 year old female leopard.... read more

Even Alan struggles to wake up for our 4th morning game drive at Lion Sands. Today, 5 am seems incredibly early to both of us as we enjoy the comfort of our bed at Ivory Lodge. Once we’re settled in the Land Rover, Enoch points the vehicle towards the river road. He’s looking for leopard. On the way, we see hippo, giraffe, waterbuck and elephant but so far, no leopard. Then, he gets the call. Lions are on the move. And, where do you think they’re headed? An elephant breakfast waits for them at the smelly watering hole. When we arrive, the lion and his brother are taking turns eating. They’ve dragged the carcass behind a tree. Mr. Lonely Lion is asleep in the road, his stomach bulging with food. Babies from the pride arrive, jumping ... read more

It’s quiet this Saturday morning as we drive through the bush. Enoch teases that the animals partied too hard last night. First stop, the watering hole with the dead elephant to see if there has been any action. Yesterday, the ecologist opened the hide of the decaying carcass so that the animals would be able to eat. Guess who found it first? That roar we heard last night was the lonely lion calling his brother, saying, “dinner time.” When the Land Rover stops near the watering hole, there is Mr. Lonely Lion guarding his meal while he waits for brother lion to appear. The stench is overwhelming. Vultures crowd the branches of all the surrounding trees waiting for a turn to eat. Continuing the morning drive, Enoch spots two rhino. We watch as they stay just ... read more

After a 5:00 am wake-up call, Torrance rings the gong on our front wall before placing a pot of coffee through the dumb waiter door in the living room. By 5:30 am, Alan and I have donned raincoats for a wet walk to the reception area where Enoch, our ranger, and his tracker, Sam, are preparing the Land Rover for this morning’s 3-hour excursion . As the rain pours, Alan, Gail (another guest) and I peer from underneath green poncho hoods at an African fish eagle, impala, kudu, cape buffalo and giraffe. The rain is pounding when Enoch asks, “Would you like to return to the lodge?” As the ladies hesitate, Alan says, “No, let’s keep going.” By the time we stop at a concrete building near a watering hole, my shirt is completely wet from ... read more

We’ve traveled 26 hours and half way around the world to experience Africa. After a night of catching up on sleep in the Sun Intercontinental Hotel at Johannesburg Airport, Alan and I catch the charter flight to Ivory Lodge at Lion Sands, a property in the Sabi Sands game preserve adjacent to Krueger National Park. When we arrive at Skukuza Airport, which is little more than a paved landing strip, Ivory Lodge guides, Lucas and Joseph, gather our luggage, then Alan and I climb into the Land Rover for our first ride down the dirt roads of the African bush. By the time we reach Ivory Lodge, we’ve seen velvet monkeys, impala, kudu and waterbuck. We’re greeted in the reception area with a cold towel plus a glass of iced tea sweetened with grenadine. Then, Robyn ... read more
