We spent 3 nights in Kruger National Park. Two nights at Pretoriuskop (http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/camps/pretoriuskop/) and one night at Crocodile Bridge (http://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/camps/croc_bridge/default.php). Different animals create the mud patch areas. Over time, if they are dug out enough, they can hold water year round.
