Background: A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to the latter. Independence came in 1976. Socialist rule was brought to a close with a new constitution and free elections in 1993. The most recent presidential elections were held in 2001; President RENE, who had served since 1977, was re-elected. In April 2004 RENE stepped down and Vice President James MICHEL was sworn in as president.

Jonathan, my 13 year old son, chose the Seychelles for his recent school project. Here's his introduction to this amazing country: The Indian Ocean dominates the Seychelles whether we are talking about the immense drops in depth off the coast of the islands or merely the size of what seem to be little specks of islands compared to the big blue bed of water extending for thousands of miles. Very few people know about the Seychelles islands. I was among those people who had no particular idea where or even what was the Seychelles until a couple months ago when [View Full Entry]

I like this place already! The people I’ve met so far have been very warm and welcoming. When I met Tiana at the airport, it was like being greeted by an old friend, finally meeting after two months of exchanging emails. Along with Tiana were Canon John and Rev. Christine. Christine will be my supervisor for the summer, and I can tell already that she’s well organized. One of the first things she did was give me a schedule of what I’ll be doing and when I’m preaching for the first two weeks of my stay. Already I can say [View Full Entry]

Sunrise over Ile Ste Anne

Hey everyone, Hope all is well back in the states, sorry i havn't written in a while, but i have been quite busy with this intern position. I have been leading about 8 dives a week with the new volunteers teaching them their fish and coral and they are nearly ready to be surveying. Last week on Anzac day, after a coral spot dive, we got to swim with and 8 foot manta ray that wandered into the bay, which is the highlight of this phase so far. Lately we have been busy fixing our other boat, Dexter Crabtree, which [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, i managed to return from kenya without being mauled or mugged. The safari was amazing and we saw everything i had hoped to. my favorite was maasai mara national reserve and seeing mt. kenya and kilimanjaro. comming home to the seychelles was refreshing but there has been a lot of work to do to get ready for the next phase. There are 24 new volunteers arriving tommorow, most of which have little diving experience so the first couple of weeks should be quite hectic. since i don't have much time here on the internet i will spend the [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, Hope everyone is well and enjoying the spring weather. its hot as hell here, but i'm loving it. i havn't been in to town lately because i despise civilization and it is becoming a chore, but hearing from all of you makes it worth while. Silhoutte was just as beautiful as the first time. we saw 3 groups of turtle hatchlings which ranks pretty high on the most amazing things i've ever seen list. also the weather was beautiful and i got to climb every day. we are now in the interphase part where all the expedition members [View Full Entry]

hey everyone, just wanted to write a quick entry to let everyone know i'm still alive. i will be heading back to silhouette for another week to hang out with the turtles. also GVI has asked me to stay on as an intern for the next phase and i couldn't pass it up. So after a 2 week trip to Kenya i will be back in the seychelles for another 10 weeks as staff (scary thought that i will be in charge of paying expedition members.) i apologize for the lack of pictures in this entry, but i promise plenty of [View Full Entry]

Hey everybody, just rolled into victoria for the last time in a while. i am leaving this saturday to spend a week on sillhoutte island doing turtle hatchling surveys and hangin out with the native giant tortoises hector, carl, and the rest. the previous groups have seen lots of nesting turtles so it is likely that we will see plenty of hatchlings. yesterday marked the end of the first five weeks and we had our five week bbq. Plenty of fried yard bird and hot dogs (the first meat we've had on base) rum punch, complete with pineapple that i gathered [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone, Hope all is well in the states and i hope its dumping snow in colorado/california/wherever. here in the seychelles it is hot and sunny. after finishing my plankton samples early this morning, and breaking the gvi record of 37 seconds for pulling the net in (its a 50 meter rope with a 5 lb. weight and a net to catch the plankton), i decided to take the rest of the day off and head into town to write an email. Life on base has been very good we have started our coral surveys and moved out of baie ternay [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, Hope all is well in the States. I have been in the Seychelles for two and a half weeks now and am quite accustomed to island life. I arrived on Jan. 9th in Victoria and spent a day on the beach at Beau Vallon before i was picked up and taken to the GVI base which is a 45 min bus ride from the capital and largest city of Victoria, and a 30 min walk from Port Launay and the nearest store and bus stop. Our base is located on Cap Ternay between two idyllic beaches, grand anse and [View Full Entry]

The 115 islands of the Seychelles are spread out in the Indian Ocean in various groups. Most people focus on the so-called inner islands and so did I, taking into account I was staying for only 8 days. I was planning to visit at least some of the inner islands including Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, the latter offering world famous beaches. As with Mauritius the year before I had booked only the flight and was planning to explore the islands on my own. However, during the preparation of my trip I quickly realised that the S [View Full Entry]
