Well we are now at Uis and have travelled about 200 kms over sand and gravel roads which are like corrugated iron. We still have a few teeth left but our vision has gone but that might be the drink! There has been a 6 year drought where we have just come from. Yesterday we were in the middle of nowhere when we were flagged down by a lady who said her little boy was very sick and they needed a lift to Khorixas, where we were going. How can you say no? Anyway, we loaded up mum, dad and little boy and gave them a 37km, teeth rattling drive to Khorixas. I gave them a packet of biscuits to eat on the way. It soon became apparent that there was nothing wrong with the boy ... read more

Today was the last day in Etosha. We explored more and soon saw a bat eared fox and a tortoise! Not much more than usual but did see a lot more of the salt pan. There were lots of lovely views looking like a sandy beach with the sea in the distance, sadly it wasn't! In the end we made our way to the exit, hiding our meat to avoid the foot and mouth check. This time we were't even inspected so kept our pork chops and sausages! Others lost theirs. The campsite is just outside the park and for once we are parked on green grass which we haven't seen for awhile! Had the necessary swim and then tried to clear the dust, a useless task as it finds its way in to everything.... read more

Last night at dusk we went to the waterhole hide and watched zebra and wildebeeste drinking. Then we had a joint barbecue. Early this morning I was up at 5:30 to the waterhole but there was little activity. Still we did watch the sunrise. Then we had 415km to drive on a long hot straight road to Etosha Safari Park. On the way we saw everyone dressed in their best ready for curch, some carrying chairs so it was obviously going to be a long sermon! Once in the park saw just one elephant and one giraffe before getting to Namutoni Camp. It is built round an old German fort. We had a swim and then saw giraffe in the distance by the waterhole. By the time I got there with a camera they'd vanished! We ... read more

Today we only had 70km todrive to get to Halali the next camp in the park. But we took our time and explored all the waterholes which are meant to be the best place to see animals. Onnthe way to the first we soon saw a rhino and a couple of jackal. At the waterhole we saw lots of springbok and zebras. At Chibob waterhole there were masses of animals, all a bit skittish and on the alert. Suddenly a hyena appeared and the zebra, gembok, impala and giraffe emptied the water. The hyena had a lovely splash around until the kudoo frightened him off. Then they all came back until 2 hyena appeared. We watched all this for quite a while and moved on. At another small pool we saw a lion walk around, that ... read more

Today was our longest trip of all 415km. So we left around 7:30 topping up with petrol before we hit the road once we had cleared the sand and gravel road. Being sunday everyone was decked in their best for church. Some were even carrying their own chairs so I guess it was going to be a long sermon. At our coffee stop we were surrounded by loads of little children so I gave them all the sweets I could find. As we left they were all fighting over them. We had 2 spots of rain but even though it has been overcast some of the day it doesn't look as if there will be any more today. Still hot 37 at last count so just off to the pool. Now at Roys Rest Camp near ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Windhoek August 16th 2016

Our final full day in Namibia, we spent a couple of hours this morning looking around Swakopmund with a bit of shopping for a few gifts. It's always a shame to leave Swakopmund and I think it's my favourite town in Africa and we were so lucky with our beach front apartment. The journey from Swako to Windhoek is all tar roads and fairly uneventful apart getting used to other traffic on the roads, which slowly builds as you approach the capital. It's surprising how quickly you get used to no traffic and it comes as a shock when you have to start looking out for other drivers as well. At one stage we saw a car coming towards us with flags in it saying 'abnormale'. We didn't think anything of it, as we had already ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Walvis Bay August 14th 2016

My turn to do the blog again today, as Rob has been unwell and was unable to come on our planned excursion to Sandwich Harbour. I made the short walk to the B&B on my own and almost jumped out of my skin when an Alsatian launched itself, barking, at a fence right beside me. I was picked up after breakfast by a real character of a guide and the next 8 hours was spent in his company along with a pleasant French family, M. et Mme. Vincent and their four boys. On the way to Walvis Bay our guide told us a lot about the local area, the history and social situation. For example a substantial coastal development between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay was originally built to accommodate uranium miners, but following a disaster the ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Sossusvlei August 13th 2016

An early start to today as we wanted to get to Sossusvlie before the day got too hot. Although we have been there before we wanted to do a return visit where we had more time as previously we had to rush as we had another excursion booked. We were out of the car park here at 7:00am and spent another 40 minutes getting an African massage, although it is only the last 5km that is really rough. We were treated to some wonderful vistas on the journey as the mist that forms overnight above the desert was still hanging in the shadows of the mountains. On the way we saw a crashed Land Rover that had had an accident on one of the bends. The gravel roads can be treacherous if you do not treat ... read more

Not such a long journey today, mainly on the C14, which was in much better repair than we remember from 2012. We started by a stop for fuel and decent coffee at Solitaire (the one criticism of Namib Desert Lodge is that their coffee is foul). Solitaire is a wonderfully quirky place, characterised by a large number of old car and truck bodies on display like a strange sculpture park. There is rumoured to be a meerkat colony but today it was the ground squirrels causing a stir - they look quite similar but their tails are fluffier and they have a more hunched stance. The C14 between Soliatire and Walvis Bay does not pass through any towns, but the scenery is wonderful. En route we travelled through the Gaus and Kuiseb Passes, both of which ... read more

How can we describe day 10, a six and and half hour African massage, if you don't know what that is read on, if you do you can stop now, or you can read on and enjoy the other parts. No early planned start today we were up and about well before the 'just in case' alarm, however some time was wasted trying to post blogs: you have to accept in Africa that WiFi is not what we In the developed world now accept as a minimum standard. As a result we will be posting this after it is written, but we will not revisit and alter what we write, it will be be first hand and raw and not changed by reflection. We always knew today would be a long day on the road, the ... read more
