05 November 2015

Like all the African sights we seen to date the Sossusvlie dunes easily came up to our expectations. As the best time to see them is in the dawn light we were up at 4.30, drove the 60k from Sesriem, travelled the last 5k in a 4x4 and at 6.30, with the low level sun magnificently picking out the contours of the dunes all around us, started walking up a sand ridge on the lower slopes of a dune called Big Daddy. Then we ran down the dune face to Dead Vlei, a salt pan with ancient dead acacia trees which were deprived of water when a river changed course. The 4x4 finished our tour by taking to Sossusvlie itself for photos before returning us to our vans. A brilliant early morning expedition.

After all the excitement we were left with 250 k of driving on thankfully mainly fairly smooth gravel roads through more beautiful country to the settlement of Betta.

We had a pleasant evening sitting around a bonfire lit to commemorate 5 November.
